Diesel
After spending the night buried inside Ellie’s gorgeous body and then a few hours just wrapped around her curves sleeping like a log, I woke up feeling focused and energized. Ellie and Leo were safe inside the clubhouse, which allowed me to figure out a plan of attack against Robert Carter.
I found the MC’s resident tech expert inside the office hunched over a black laptop. “What have you got for me, Slate?”
He looked up and sighed before scrubbing a hand over his tired face. “Some good news. Sort of.” He pointed to a document on the screen with lots of words and numbers.
“What am I looking at?”
“A phone number.” He tapped the screen. “This number was in contact with two of the dead girls. It’s a burner and they used one of those apps with the vanishing messages, so we don’t know who it is or what they were talking about—that was a good suggestion of Ellie’s I have to say—anyway, I’m not sure I’ll be able to retrieve the messages but I’m working on tracking down the burner.”
I frowned. “I thought the whole damn point of a burner is being untraceable.”
“It is, but only if you’re smart about covering your tracks. You can buy those pay as you go phones with cash and activate them online, but paying by card is so easy most people forget that part. Or if we figure out where they bought the phone, then the store might have security cameras and recordings. It’s a longshot but we might get lucky. I’ll see what I can find.”
“Thanks, Slate. Good work.” If we could figure out if there was a tie between Carter and those girls, it would help Sheriff Cross put them away. That’s if he could get to the asshole before the Steel Demons did. “No sign the girls were ever inside our clubs or whorehouses?”
“None. They’re too young, and no fake IDs line up with any scanned the nights before or after the bodies were dumped.”
“Okay, good. What else?”
Hawk and Rocky entered the office, both wearing dark expressions.
“What the fuck now?” Slate growled.
“I did some digging,” Hawk said, shaking his head. “Looks like someone from Carter Development has looked into getting eminent domain over some of our properties.”
“Anyone buying what they’re selling?”
“Not yet. But it looks like the mayor and town council have been going on some pretty exotic vacations over the past couple of years.”
