She nodded. “Yep. Soon enough Leo will be asking to sleep over at their houses. When the time comes, you’ll already have done full background checks on ’em.”
I was in awe of her forward thinking. “You’re a genius,” I told her, and kissed her cheek. “Wish me luck.”
“There he is,” Leo proclaimed loudly. “This is my dad,” he said with a proud smile as he introduced me to the parents of his two closest friends.
I sighed one last time, slapped a smile on my face, and sank into the role of suburban dad, a role I never thought I wanted but now couldn’t imagine any other way.
I found Ellie across the backyard, and she winked. That one move and the promise in her eyes gave me enough juice to get through another ten minutes of small talk.
And just when everyone settled around to eat, I made my escape and took my wife with me.
