And when I cursed him and told him it was distracting, he grinned and slyly suggested that I could take mine off if I wanted to even the playing field. And just like that, my panties were wet.

So fucking distracting.

It also didn’t help that every time I was taken to be Reyna’s plaything, she made it her sole mission in life to make sure I was robbed of every orgasm I came close to. And now my thighs were clenching together as Ladon’s breath danced across my ear.

“Are you even trying? You might be weaker than I originally thought,” he murmured, and I summoned enough frustration to jab my elbow into him, slide a hand under his arm and twist out of his hold the way he’d shown me a hundred times.

“Better, but if I’d actually been trying to hurt you, you would’ve been done for.”

I crossed my arms over my chest and sighed. “I’m not as strong as you. I don’t have all those muscles,” I said, waving a hand at his physique. A vein that snaked down his forearm and blended in with the vines was particularly distracting at that moment.

“You don’t need to be as strong. You just need to be strategic. Let’s practice again from the ground.”

I lay down with my back on the floor while Ladon straddled my stomach. I could tell he wasn’t putting his full weight on me. He didn’t think we were there yet.

“Ready?”

I nodded.

He threw mock punches, and I looked for the window of opportunity, dodging punches and waiting for the right moment. There—I crunched up and wrapped my arms around his middle, pulling him down toward me. He struggled, though not with his full strength, while I dug my heels in and pushed off the ground, flipping us both over so Ladon was on his back now.

“Not bad,” he said. It had only taken me fifty tries. The first time, I could hardly lift him, which is why I was certain he was making it easier for me. My thighs hadn’t gotten that strong in a matter of days.

“You’re holding back,” I said.

“I’m teaching you like I would any beginner. You can’t skip ahead five steps.”

“We don’t have the same amount of time you would’ve to teach a beginner. I need to learn these skills now.”

“And you will,” he said, sitting up and grabbing my chin with one hand. He stroked my skin with his thumb and gods, I forgot everything I was supposed to be learning again.

My breath hitched, and his thumb stilled. He dropped his hand as well as his gaze and nervously cracked his neck.

“Let’s take a break.”

I wanted to keep training but my mind was so erratic, a break to clear my thoughts would be beneficial.

We didn’t have time to practice again until after our chores were done for the day. Reyna’s guard dropped by earlier than usual and took us to clean the kitchens.

Once we returned to our room, Ladon settled into his usual routine of staring at the ceiling and waiting for Reyna’s return. At least these days he was eating before he laid down.

I didn’t interrupt him. If this was how he needed to prepare, then I wouldn’t interfere. I only wished there was something more I could do.

Like clockwork, Reyna came to retrieve Ladon a little after an hour. He made an excuse to use the bathroom before he went with her. I figured he was making sure the vial was in place and wouldn’t be discovered over the course of the evening.

Reyna stared at me while she waited. And I stared right back.

Heinous bitch.

“I have quite the evening prepared. It’s too bad you can’t join us, Emilie.”

My eyes narrowed to slits.

“Nothing to say for yourself?”

I was pretty sure she was baiting me. Hoping I’d slip up and she could use it as an excuse to take me along, too. Not that she needed an excuse. She could take me this evening too and I’d have no say in it.

But I was convinced she was only interested in Ladon. For every evening she summoned me, she summoned him ten times more. She was so transparent in her lust for him.
