They stared at each other.

“Maybe it was just a vacation romance?” That thought made her stomach queasy. “Like stuck in a special place, needing something special to do?—”

“You were not something to do like Sudoku or a crossword puzzle.” He moved to be face to face with her. His hand holding onto hers. “But I understand. I have the company here. My family is here.”

“But I’m not.”

Callie watched Liam’s Adam’s apple move slowly up and down on a big swallow. “Can we try long distance?” he asked.

“We can try.” The idea sat heavy in her gut. She either wanted to be with him or she needed to cut ties, but tonight she needed him. “Make love to me, Liam.”

She’d think about her future … tomorrow.

Liam

“We have to tell them.” Liam glared at his little brother over his mug of coffee. They’d both needed extra cups that day to get going.

Sam leaned back against the kitchen sink cabinet. “I almost did last night.”

“No. I need to tell Callie before you tell Meg.”

“Why?”

“Because you don’t want to continue your relationship with—” Liam raised his voice, “Meg! Hey, you look beautiful.”

Sam elbowed Liam and his coffee splashed over the edge. “He’s right. You look amazing, babe.”

Liam snuck behind them and grabbed his tuxedo jacket off the dining room chair. It was a walnut twelve-piece set from his parents’ home. The last thing his mother bought and the first thing his father gave away. He couldn’t stand to have anything that reminded him of her. Liam liked being reminded.

A waft of Callie’s perfume announced she was behind him. He turned to face her, and at that moment, it didn’t matter how, but he wanted to see her every day. And not by phone or computer.

“The bride’s going to be jealous.” He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close.

“Why?”

“Because she won’t be the most beautiful woman at the wedding.”

She rocked her body against him, and he chuckled. “I think it’s time, right?”

“Brittney’s texted me three times to remind me, so yeah, I think we should get going.”

Her warm hand slipped into his. “Let’s go. Tonight, I want to dance with you, and I’m not going to care who watches us.”

Before she could pull on his hand to move him, he guided her back to him. “Callie, I want you to know something.”

Her body pressed to his and he about forgot his name. “What?”

Sam slapped his back. “Bro, Britt just called with a 9-1-1. She forgot her head thingy at her house, and we need to run by there.”

“Veil,” Callie and Meg said at the same time.

Sam grinned. “Whatever. Come on! She’s freaking out and you don’t want her to start screaming at you. I took the brunt, but she’s going to go red-Britt, and no one wants to see that.”

Callie followed on their heels. She turned back. “Aren’t you coming?”

“Yeah.” He checked his pockets—phone, wallet, keys.
