She releases a shaky breath. “Alright.”

“Talk to me; are you okay?” I ask her quietly.

“Yes. Running on adrenaline, though.”

“Did Gavin or Dominic touch you?” I ask, barely above a whisper.

“No.” I’m still going to fucking hunt down both those fuckers and torture them within an inch of their lives, only to revive them and do it all over, day in and day out; but hearing her say that does put me at ease. “Fabio, Gavin killed Dominic at Taylor’s, and then he torched her house.” I can hear Taylor crying in the background.

That just means Gavin’s torture got doubled. “We’ll sort it all out when I get home. Love you, Kitty Kat,” I say, not giving a fuck Sam’s listening.

“Love you too, Mr. Psycho.”

“That’s not my pet name,” I tell her.

“Yes it is.” She hangs up.

“Being around all you wifed up men has me needing a dentist. Too fucking sticky-sweet; it’s giving me cavities.” Sam shakes his head as he walks off.

Chapter

Forty-Two

Kat

I take a seat next to Taylor on the hard gravel parking lot, both of us lost in thought as we watch the sunrise. “What the hell just happened?” My friend breaks the silence.

I wrap my arms around my legs. “I’m sorry you got dragged into the middle of this.”

“I’m still not sure what exactly this is,” Taylor says, and then she starts crying again. “Oh my God, Gavin killed Dominic and blew up my house.”

“Hey, we’ve got to be careful talking about this in the open,” I say, looking around. I assume we’re alone, but better safe than sorry.

“How the hell are you so calm?” Taylor wipes her nose on her shirt.

“One of us has to be. Yin/yang. Good cop/bad cop. Responsible friend/drunk friend getting us kicked out of brunch,” I tell her, and she snorts a laugh.

An SUV turns into the parking lot and I stand, helping Taylor to her feet. The passenger window rolls down, and Vince leans over Luna. “Ladies, get in.”

I open the door and usher Taylor inside before climbing in and closing the door behind me. “Hi, Kat,” Luna says, craning her neck “Who’s your friend?”

“Luna and Vince, this is Taylor,” I say, glancing over to my shell-shocked friend.

“Looks like you two have been through some shit. That seems to happen around these men,” Luna muses.

“Luna, that’s enough,” Vince warns. “Shouldn’t you be practicing?”

“I have a chess tournament coming up. And I already have a chess coach,” Luna snipes at Vince, but opens a laptop with a picture of a chess board and balances it on her lap.

Glancing over to Taylor, her eyes are closed, and so I lean my head back and rest my eyes. I startle to find us pulling into the driveway of the beach house. “Where are we?” Taylor asks with a yawn.

“My house. Well, mine and my husband’s.” Fabio gifted it to me, but I’ll be a good girl and add his name back on the deed.

“Husband?” Taylor’s mouth falls open as she eyes my plastic ring.

“A lot’s happened since we last talked,” I admit sheepishly. Vince rolls my window down, and I reach over Taylor to punch in the gate code.

It swings open, and Vince pulls through and parks, and we get out of the vehicle. “We’re all going to hang tight until Fabio gets here,” Vince announces.
