“Trenton is at Dario’s house, demanding to be let in,” Sanjay said. “I can’t leave work. Is there any way you can—”

“Give me his address.” There was a growl in Jake’s voice.

After Sanjay gave Jake the address, he said, “I just want you to bring Dario to me. Please, Jake. Don’t get into a fight.”

“I got this.” Jake hung up, making Sanjay wonder if he’d done the right thing by sending his mate to Dario’s.

His mate. The more Sanjay tried that word out in his mind, the more he liked it. He still had a ton of issues to work out, like getting past the fact that Jake was a wolf shifter, but so far, Jake had been nothing but sweet and patient with him.

But so had Matt when they’d first started dating.

Sanjay’s heart raced as he waited for Jake to bring Dario to him. He knew he had made the right decision by calling Jake, but he couldn’t shake off the feeling of guilt that Jake might get hurt because of him.

* * * *

Jake arrived at Dario’s house, his fists clenched in anger at the sight of Trenton on the porch. So this was the guy who’d put his hands on Sanjay. Jake had been dying for a piece of him since the incident.

He stepped out of his car and headed toward the porch. Trenton, who was around Jake’s height, but lacked lean muscles, turned to look him over. The guy had dark hair. He was wearing jeans and a leather, and his eyes were cold and flat.

Jake was ready to go for the bastard’s throat. Sanjay had asked him not to get into a fight, but that was like asking him not to breathe. There was no way Jake was letting Trenton walk away from this.

“Who’re you?” Trenton asked with a sneer.

“Leave now, or I’ll make you,” Jake growled as he grabbed Trenton by the collar of his jacket and slammed him into the wall. “You put your fucking hands on my mate.”

“I don’t even know you.” Trenton tried to shove Jake backward but with little success.

Jake’s grip on Trenton tightened as he snarled in his face. “You don’t need to know me. All you need to know is that you’re never going near Sanjay again.”

He emphasized each word, his wolf surging to the surface.

Trenton’s eyes widened in fear, but he tried to bluff his way out of the situation. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I just came here to talk to Dario.”

Jake knew he was lying. He could smell the fear and malice rolling off him.

Trenton’s sneer faltered as he met Jake’s gaze. He struggled to break free, but Jake was too strong.

“I’m not afraid of you,” Trenton spat out, but his voice wavered slightly.

Jake leaned in closer, his nose almost touching Trenton’s. “You should be,” he growled. “Because I will do whatever it takes to protect Sanjay, even if it means tearing your mangy ass apart.”

Trenton’s eyes widened, and Jake could see the realization dawning on him. Trenton’s hyena was no match for a wolf shifter in a fight, especially not one as powerful and experienced as Jake.

“Fine,” Trenton finally said, his voice barely above a whisper. “I’ll leave.”

Jake hated bullies. And just like any bully, when confronted with someone stronger, the bully would tuck tail and run. That was exactly what Trenton was doing, but Jake had no doubt whatsoever that the guy would be back.

Fucking hyenas. God, how Jake hated them.

They were opportunistic creatures, underhanded, and you couldn’t trust one as far as you could throw them. He watched as Trenton practically ran to his car. Jake wanted to destroy the son of a bitch, but Dario lived in the suburbs of Midnight Falls, and there were too many houses around.

He didn’t want any human neighbors witnessing him killing Trenton or see one of them shifting. But damn, anger rolled through Jake as Trenton sped off down the street. At least he now knew what the guy looked like and had the make and model of his car, along with his license plate.

He would give that information to Deputy Cannon Lowery. Jake wanted to know where Trenton lived.

After taking a few deep, calming breaths, Jake knocked on the door. “It’s me. Jake,” he called out. “Open up, Dario. Sanjay sent me.”

The door slowly opened, and Jake saw one green eye looking up at him. He’d never met Dario before, just like he’d never met Trenton. Jake had only seen Dario from across the bar, and honestly, he hadn't been paying much attention to the human that night. Jake’s attention had been on Sanjay.
