“I’m going to kick your ass. If you fuck with my food, I just might make you eat your own tongue.”

The guy laughed. “I highly doubt that, shrimp.”

Sanjay narrowed his eyes. “You asked for it.”

The skinny man lunged at Sanjay, but Sanjay was quick on his feet. He dodged the attack and countered with a swift punch to the man’s gut, causing him to double over in pain. Sanjay didn’t waste any time and delivered a powerful uppercut to the man’s jaw, sending him sprawling to the ground.

“Now who’s a shrimp, bitch?” Sanjay asked as he stood over the human. “Consider yourself lucky I held back.”

He looked over at Jake, who’d disarmed the barrel guy. The stranger was on the ground, cradling his arm to his chest. “You broke it!”

Sanjay grinned. “He could have broken every bone in your damn body,” he said to the larger man. “Scurry away before my boyfriend smears you all over the pavement.”

“Sanjay!” Jake yelled, but it was too late. The beanpole lunged upward, thrusting a blade into Sanjay’s gut with a sickening squelch. Sanjay let out a cry as his knees buckled and he hit the ground.

Then he heard a deafening growl as Jake attacked, pummeling the skinny guy until the man lost consciousness. Jake spun, glaring down the other man.

The large guy got up and ran, leaving his friend behind.

Jake dropped to his knees next to Sanjay. “We just have to get you home so you can shift.”

“J-Jake.” Sanjay looked down at his wound, his shirt drenched in his own blood.

“No, don’t talk. Just hold on, okay? I’m going to get you home as fast as I can.” Jake gently scooped Sanjay into his arms and started running toward the parking lot. Sanjay winced in pain as Jake jostled him, but he bit back a cry, not wanting to make his mate more worried. He knew Jake was doing the best he could in this situation.

As they reached the car, Jake fumbled with the keys, dropping them twice before finally managing to unlock the door. He gently placed Sanjay in the passenger seat and then rushed around to the driver’s side.

Jake peeled out of the parking lot, tires screeching as he sped toward Sanjay’s home. Sanjay leaned his head against the window, trying to stay conscious.

“I kicked his ass,” Sanjay said with a slur. “Fuck, I forgot my bag of food.”

“I’ll get you more,” Jake said, taking hairpin turns. “I’ll get you whatever the fuck you want to eat, babe. How you doing over there?”

“Not so great.” Sanjay could feel the darkness closing in, but he fought it, knowing he needed to stay awake long enough to shift.

“We’re almost there,” Jake said. “Keep your gorgeous eyes open.”

When they finally reached Sanjay’s house, Jake carried him inside and laid him down on his bed. He quickly stripped Sanjay’s clothes off, revealing the gaping wound in his stomach.

“Shift,” Jake said, his voice shaking with fear. “Please, shift, sweetheart.”

Sanjay nodded weakly and closed his eyes, focusing all of his energy on shifting. It took every ounce of strength he had left, but eventually he felt the familiar sensation of his body changing right before he passed out.

Chapter Nine

“Jesus fucking Christ,” Cannon bellowed into the phone. “One guy has a broken arm, and the other is in a coma. What the hell, Jake.”

“And my mate was stabbed,” Jake snarled. “They better consider themselves lucky they’re still breathing.”

“I didn’t know about that. Is Sanjay okay?” Cannon’s tone had shifted from pissed off to deep concern. “Which one stabbed him?”

“The coma guy. I unleashed on him after he stabbed Sanjay.” Jake was still furious as he paced Sanjay’s bedroom, glancing at the beautiful gazelle fast asleep. “My mate was bleeding out pretty fast. If I hadn’t gotten him home to shift, he would have died, Cannon.”

“His gazelle would have come out sooner if it knew Sanjay was about to die,” Cannon commented. “I’m still sorry to hear what happened to him. As soon as Laurance comes out of his coma, he’ll be charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder. His friend will be charged as an accomplice and for pulling that unregistered gun on you.”

That still didn’t settle Jake’s rage. “Just give me five minutes with him when he wakes up.”

“You got your revenge, Jake,” Cannon said. “Let the law handle it from here.”
