Although Jake knew Cannon was right, he wanted to kill Laurance. “Who’s the other guy?”

“Manny Wintz,” Cannon said. “I talked to Kendrick. He said he threw Manny and Laurance out when they started a fight with a table of college-aged kids. Manny swore to Kendrick that the kids started it.”

Jake was going to start a new rule. Anyone causing trouble was banned for life, not just for the night. That wouldn’t have stopped Dumb and Dumber from confronting Jake and Sanjay but would hopefully make others reconsider before letting their anger get the better of them.

“That sounds like something a five-year-old would whine about,” Jake said. “People have disagreements all the time. That doesn’t mean they have a right to try and jump someone.”

“I agree.” Cannon sighed. “Any more confrontations with Trenton?”

“No.” Jake sat on the side of the bed and placed a hand on the gazelle’s fur. “Not since I saw him on Dario’s porch.”

“Well, the news that the plate came back stolen isn’t going to sit well with you,” Cannon replied. “Was stolen from two towns over, so we still have no idea where Trenton lives.”

Jake should have just stayed in bed when Kendrick called him. Sanjay wouldn’t have been assaulted, and he would be getting the news of Trenton at a later time. Jake was consumed with anger, unsure of how to cope with the intense emotion.

“Thanks for your help,” he finally said.

“Not that I’ve been much help,” Cannon countered. “Jake, we are looking for Trenton. We will take care of Manny and Laurance. Things seemed to be slowly moving for you right now, but you’re not alone in this.”

Jake hung up and set his phone aside just as Sanjay shifted from his gazelle into his human form. Jake turned, checking his mate’s stomach to make sure the wound had healed.

“That…was…fucked up,” Sanjay groaned. “Have I told you that you have eyes as dreamy as a blue sky on a summer day?”

“You’re delirious.” But Jake smiled at the compliment. Plenty of people had told him that they loved his eyes, but to hear his mate say it meant something to him.

“Premature celebration,” Sanjay said, his eyes still closed.

“Huh?”

“I celebrated my victory too soon.” Sanjay finally opened his eyes. “I should have kept an eye on Beanpole instead of being a dork about my victory.”

Jake stretched out next to his mate. “You were amazing.”

“You didn’t even see me take him down.”

“I had my guy down in time to see you throw a two-punch that put Beanpole on his ass.” Jake winked. “Some impressive skills you have.”

“I saw you attack Beanpole after he stabbed me. Did you kill him?”

Jake knew his answer mattered to Sanjay. His mate had already been through enough violence, and he didn’t want the guy looking at him as a monster because he was a wolf. “He’s in a coma.”

The way Sanjay looked at him, Jake braced himself for some kind of fall-out. “He tried to gut me. You should have returned the favor.”

Jake frowned. “You wanted me to kill him?”

When Sanjay sat up, so did Jake. “I’m completely against violence, but if someone tries to take me out, next time, don’t hold back your punches.”

With a chuckle, Jake nuzzled Sanjay’s neck. “As long as I have your permission.”

The only reason Laurance wasn’t dead was because Jake had been too concerned with getting his mate home to shift. He hadn’t been holding back. Laurance in a coma had been self-defense. If Jake went after him now, it would be straight-up murder.

Not that Jake cared about killing the bastard, but the hospital staff might frown at it. Jake was cool with the cops in Midnight Falls but not so cool they would cover up him killing Beanpole.

Not when there would be so many witnesses around.

Alone, that was another story.

“Thank you.” Sanjay slid a hand down Jake’s side. “For defending me.”
