“You just wanted to isolate him so you could abuse him without anyone saying anything,” Sanjay bit out. “I know your type, Trenton. Under all that fake bravado, you’re nothing but a coward.”

Trenton shot him in the leg. Sanjay cried out, gripping his leg as immense pain ripped through him.

“No!” Dario raced toward Trenton and collided with him.

Trenton backhanded Dario so hard the guy flew across the room and crashed into the coffee table, groaning as he slumped to the floor. Trenton cursed and turned his attention back to Sanjay, who was struggling to crawl away.

Trenton seemed to sense what Sanjay was trying to do and advanced on him, his face twisted in rage. “You think you’re so smart, don’t you?” he sneered. “But you’re just a pathetic little man who doesn’t know when to keep his mouth shut.”

Sanjay glared up at him, refusing to let Trenton see him break. He knew that if he showed any fear, it would only give Trenton more power over him.

“Go ahead and shoot me,” Sanjay said. “It won’t change the fact that you’re an abusive asshole who only picks on people smaller than him. You’re a weak coward, Trenton.”

Trenton snarled and raised the gun. “I’ve been wanting to get rid of you for a long time now.”

“Sanjay,” Dario whimpered. “I’m so damn sorry.”

Sanjay didn’t want to hear Dario’s apologies. He never wanted to hear his voice again. His best friend had gotten Sanjay’s mate killed. Jake hadn’t moved, which told Sanjay he’d lost his mate, and the pain he was experiencing was so intense that Sanjay didn’t want to live.

Trenton smirked as he aimed the gun directly at Sanjay’s head. Sanjay closed his eyes, waiting for the end to come. But instead of the sharp pain he expected, a loud crash echoed through the house.

Sanjay’s eyes flew open just in time to see Trenton falling to the floor, a knife embedded in his chest. Dario stood over him, his face pale but determined.

“I couldn’t let him kill you,” Dario whispered, his voice shaking. “I know I messed up, but I couldn’t let him hurt you anymore.”

Sanjay stared at his friend, a mix of emotions warring inside him. He was angry at Dario for bringing Trenton into his home, for causing Jake’s death. But he also saw the remorse and fear in Dario’s eyes. He also knew that his friend had been trapped in a cycle of abuse for far too long.

“Call the police,” Sanjay said softly, his voice barely above a whisper. “Tell them what happened.”

Dario screamed when Trenton got up, pulled the knife from his chest, and tossed it aside. “You dare stab me?”

Sanjay dove for Dario as Trenton fired off a round, missing them. He fired again, but Sanjay pulled Dario behind the couch, wondering how in the fuck they were going to get out of this.

“I’m going to kill Sanjay and then punish you, Dario,” Trenton taunted, though neither of them could see him. “I’m going to tie you up and enjoy beating you.”

Dario slapped a hand over his mouth, tears in his eyes. Sanjay clenched his jaw. “You’re still a piece of shit,” he said. “Put the gun down and we’ll see who’s the better man.”

“What’re you doing?” Dario whispered. “Have you lost your mind?”

Sanjay ignored him. He wasn’t ready to forgive Dario for this. Instead, he listened for footsteps. He listened for Trenton’s heavy breathing. The guy might have been on his feet, but he was still badly injured and losing blood.

Sanjay prayed the bastard died from his wound but knew Trenton would shift to heal instead. If he did, Sanjay was going to take that gun and unload it into Trenton’s damn skull.

Trenton was trying to be quiet. Sanjay heard soft footsteps rounding the couch. He grabbed Dario’s hand and moved slowly. If they could make it to the kitchen, they might stand a chance.

Thankfully, Dario quietly followed. They made it to the edge of the couch then stopped. Sanjay strained to hear. A floorboard creaked, telling him where Trenton was.

Sanjay, still holding Dario’s hand, took off toward the kitchen as a shot rang out, the bullet hitting the wall inches from his head as he raced into the kitchen and toward the back door.

Another shot rang out, breaking the glass in the back door. Sanjay dropped, taking Dario down with him, and crawled behind the island in the center of the room.

“You’re only prolonging your death,” Trenton said. “Come out, come out, wherever you are.”

The guy was a real damn psycho. Sanjay had always known that Trenton was dangerous, but he didn’t think the guy was a psychopath. Or maybe he’d known and had chosen to ignore that fact. Right now, Sanjay didn’t know and didn’t care.

His only thought was to survive this.

Sanjay peeked around the island, looking for any sign of Trenton. He didn’t see anything, but he knew the man was still out there. Trenton was injured but not enough to stop him from killing them both.
