“Thanks.” Now Sanjay felt like a lightweight celebrity. It was good to know his hard work was appreciated.

Sanjay practically floated back to the table, his mood suddenly lifted. Dario gave him a knowing look. “Who’s the hottie at the bar you were talking to?”

“His name’s Jake, and he loves my bakery,” Sanjay said with a grin.

Dario smiled, the first real one tonight. “Ooh, a hot guy who’s a fan of your sweets? Sounds promising.”

Sanjay’s business consumed most of his time, leaving little room for dating. However, the appreciation for his creations and the attention from a handsome man were pleasant surprises.

What was Sanjay supposed to say to Dario? That he would find a hot guy to date? It would be shitty timing if Sanjay said something like that. There was no magic cure for heartache, unless Sanjay asked a vampire to erase Dario’s memory, which he’d never do. People grew and learned from their experiences. If Sanjay had a vampire do that, then Dario might agree to see Trenton again.

Besides, Sanjay didn’t know any vampires, anyway.

Sanjay wasn’t sure how much time had passed before Jake appeared with a basket of steaming food and drinks in hand, setting them down on the table with a grin.

“I didn’t order fries,” Sanjay said.

“Compliments of Kendrick,” Jake replied. “I told you. We’re all fans of your desserts.”

Sanjay smiled, pleased that the staff of Fearless Fox appreciated his baked goods. “Well, please send my thanks to Kendrick. That’s very kind of him.”

Jake nodded. “Will do. Enjoy your meal.” He gave Sanjay one last grin before heading back behind the bar.

Sanjay watched him walk away, admiring Jake’s lean, yet muscular frame. He definitely wouldn’t mind getting to know the handsome bartender better.

“I think someone has a crush,” Dario teased, popping a French fry into his mouth.

“Oh shush,” Sanjay said, though he could feel his cheeks flushing. He picked up a wing and took a bite. The savory sauce exploded over his tongue. “Mmm...these are amazing.”

Dario selected a wing for himself. “Told ya this place had some good food.” He took a sip of his whiskey before turning his gaze back to Sanjay. “So, are you going to ask Mr. Hottie Bartender out or what?”

Sanjay nearly choked on his wing. “What? No, of course not. I just met the guy.”

“So? Ask for his number. I dare you.”

“Absolutely not,” Sanjay protested. “This was supposed to be a night out for you, not me.”

Dario waved his hand. “Please. Watching you flirt with Mr. Blue Eyes over there is way more entertaining than listening to me whine about my fucked-up love life.”

Sanjay looked toward the bar, noticing how Jake was watching him. Maybe he should ask for the guy’s number, but Sanjay was shy as hell when it came to men.

If Jake was interested enough, he’d ask for Sanjay’s number before the night was over.

Chapter Two

Hanging out with Dario last night had Sanjay dragging his feet the next morning. Was it really only six? Why on earth had he come in so early to decorate a cupcake sheet cake? Wait. Three of them. He’d decorated only one yesterday.

Right now what Sanjay needed was some coffee with a few shots of espresso. He headed to Bluebird Café, where most of the town picked up coffee in the morning. Sanjay wasn’t at war with Ajax. In fact, a lot of times Ajax bought cakes and pies from Sanjay and resold them by the slice in his café.

Sanjay pretty much got along with most of the people in town, except for scumbags like Trenton.

Sanjay dragged himself into Bluebird Café, the morning sun barely peeking over the horizon. He stifled a yawn as he got in line behind a few other early risers and scanned the busy shop. His gaze landed on a familiar face.

Jake was sitting at one of the small tables near the window, a cup of coffee and a slice of pie in front of him. Who in their right mind ate pie at six in the morning?

When it was his turn, Sanjay turned back toward the counter and shuffled forward.

“You’re here early,” Ajax remarked, grabbing a to-go cup. “The usual?”
