“That’s right.”

“And you think I, down here in Colombia, have the juice to make that happen?”

Court said, “I think I have to start somewhere, and you used to be the DDO. You know people, organizations, institutions.”

“All true. Which is why I already know she’s not in China.”

Court turned as thunder rumbled. “What?”

“A private plane left Matanzas about twelve hours after she was brought there by helo. It flew direct to Moscow. Our satellite couldn’t see who boarded because one person had a bag over their head.”

He paused, then said, “The person’s hands were in shackles.”

“Major Xinyue Liu, aka Kimmie Lin, was a passenger on the flight, so you do the math.”

“Russia will execute her.” Court said it softly, looking back to the impending weather.

Hanley shook his head. “You don’t know that. And even if they do, they’ll probably want a big show trial, something to scare other turncoats in the intelligence services. Think about it. They wouldn’t take her all the way there just to shoot her in the back of the head. We’ve got some time.”

Court could feel his emotions getting the better of him, and he fought to regain control. Before he could speak, Hanley said, “You should reach out to your friend Lacy, as well. She might be able to provide some backchannel intel that I’m not privy to.”

Court just said, “I’ll reach out to everyone I know, do whatever I have to do. I’ve got old contacts in Russia; if they’re still alive, they will help me.”

Hanley said, “I’ll make some calls myself.”

Court nodded. The first drops of rain announced themselves loudly on the corrugated overhang above them. He turned away from the storm for the first time. “I appreciate you, Matt. Just know, Zoya would do the same for you.”

Hanley nodded. “I’ve got some ideas of where to start with this. Come on in, let’s hit the ground running, because Anthem doesn’t have time to spare.”

The storm arrived in force, and the two American men retreated inside the darkened Bogotá apartment.

Then they went to work.
