It shouldn’t, but my heart stutters at the sound of his words, slowing a tad. Enough that I can hold my breath to try and steady myself even with my blurry thoughts. There’s only one thing I focus on. One thing that trumps the panic and fear running rampant inside me.

He’s coming for me.

Chapter 6

FREDDIE

I put the pedal to the gas, speeding down the straight heading to the private airfield we’re following Lucian to. He’s held the tail of the Discovery ahead of us for as long as possible on his own as Casper and I speed past him. Leo and Christopher are behind us. The moment I get us within shooting range, Casper gets his gun ready. It’s not quite his trusty rifle friend, but it’s a lot easier to point and shoot at high speed. Especially since in the hour it took us to get here, it’s pitch-dark. All shots are going to be a guessing game.

“Can you see her?” I ask, trying to hold the Merc steady enough that he can take out one of the tyres.

It’ll slow them down a fair bit so that we can overtake with the lurch of the vehicle and Casper can take care of business. The only problem we have is that if the Disco flips, it’s going to get a fuck tonne messier than we want.

“We’re too low down,” he replies as I dodge the bullet that comes out of nowhere.

Another follows, skimming my side of the car as I quickly pull closer to the back of the Rover and hold steady, telling him, “Blow the fucking wheel.”

If it rolls, it rolls. It’ll be another thing I hadn’t planned for tonight.

With barely a second to steady himself, he shoots the back wheel and quickly does the same to the front, completely destabilising the Discovery as I pick up speed and race in front at the same time as Leo pulls forward, taking our position just as the helicopter comes into sight ahead of us.

“Slow down,” Casper grits out as he pushes the seat all the way back and turns so that he’s facing backwards, squeezing into a crouch in between the seat and footwell. He looks ridiculous even with the deadly look of concentration in his stare. “Hand me yours.”

When I hand him my gun, he leans out of the window slightly. I slow down as he asked me to and keep eyes on the rear-view mirror, waiting for him to make his calculated move as I keep slowing until I can pretty much feel the Disco up my arse. We’re too close and too low down for them to have a shot at us.

Casper shoots once, straight into the motor, and billows of smoke immediately pour from beneath the bonnet and the grill as the 4x4 begins to sputter.

“Go!” he tells me, and as I push the gas again, he goes for it.

Shot after shot breaks the squeals of the tyres as white and grey smoke completely obscures our view of the car behind us.

“Oh shit!” I change lanes and pull back behind the cover of smoke. “There’s more of them coming right at us.”

No sooner have I spoken than gunfire booms around us as we fall back beside Leo and Christopher.

“There’s more behind us too,” he growls, pulling a fresh magazine from his holster as I lower the steering wheel enough that I can just about hold it steady with my knees while I grab my gun and go about reloading it too.

“You hold the back, I’ll hold the front,” I tell him as I answer Christopher’s call. “Yeah, what?”

“Turn around,” he yells in between pops. “Get behind us. You cover Lucian and—”

The call cuts off as the Maserati pulls behind us, and Leo spins his tail to mine while Lucian guns it beside us. I’m not sure how much longer his Jag is going to last with all the bullet holes peppering it, but that’s irrelevant considering Christopher and Leo are bearing the brunt of the chase behind us.

“The helo needs to cover them.”

“Can’t. We’re too open, and from up there, they’re too visible even in the dark.”

“We’re in the middle of fucking nowhere. It doesn’t matter.”

Facing the front, he pulls his rifle from the soft-top shelf. “Come to papa, sweetheart.”

This arsehole is talking to his rifle as if it’s his wife, and they call me the fucking weirdo?

“I have an idea,” I tell him, peeling away again as Lucian comes to a stop beside the Discovery and Leo does the same. “I’m going to spin and charge, and you’re going to get as many of the bastards as you can.”

“Are you fucking crazy?”

“I’m not the one sweet-talking my fucking weapon.” I gain enough momentum to drift and spin.
