“Jordan could be dying!” Her yell echoes around us so loud that it makes her jump at the stark sound of her own voice. “I am not leaving. I’m not leaving him.”

This right here is what makes her a better person than me. Georgina isn’t only loyal to a fault. She also loves to her detriment. Her heart is what makes her special, unlike anyone I’ve ever known. It’s why she’s the only one capable of making me feel like this. This precious thing is all the heart I need.

Taking her hand, I take a step closer until I’m standing beside her and we’re face to face. “I told you that I would do everything I can for him, but you’re going to let me make sure that you are all right too.”

“I’m f—”

“No, Georgina. No arguments. Please…” I add the latter to disarm her defensive stance.

“I’m not leaving until he’s out. You can. You can go.”

Rounding my arm around her waist, I guide her to the wall, and when her gaze follows my every move, I crouch before sitting on the ground, directly facing the surgical theatres’ door.

“I’m good right here.” With a pat to my thigh, I coax her to sit with me.

It takes Georgina a moment to acquiesce. Her hand grasping my shoulder, she gracefully and slowly lowers herself to sit beside me. It may not be what she wants right now, but it is what she needs. Comfort and warmth. It may not come naturally or easily to me, however, there’s no way I’m going to let her feel like she’s alone. Manoeuvring her onto my lap, I press a kiss to her cheek.

“I know you don’t like Jordan. You’ve made it clear how you feel about him, so you don’t have to stay. You don’t have to be here.”

In spite of her words, her body thaws into mine when I find her hands with mine and lace our fingers together as I enfold her with my arms.

“I do. Here is exactly where I belong right now.” With her. That’s where I should’ve been all this time. Stroking the side of her face with the tip of my nose, I hold her tighter with every word I murmur into her ear. “I left you when you needed me far too many times, and I’m not going to…I can’t do it again.”

“I don’t care…I-I don’t mind… I know that—”

“No, Georgina. I mind.”

Dark-rimmed eyes meet mine as her head lolls to the side on my shoulder, and as fucked up as everything is right now, I know that it’ll be okay because of her. I’m going to make it okay. I’m going to fix it all if it’s the last thing I do, because I will make her smile again. Even if it costs me my last breath, I will hear her laugh, and I will look into her bottomless stare and find the light again.

“I fucking care. About you and about what matters to you. I care, Swan.” Coiling my arms snugger around her, I add, “And I’m going to fix this. No matter what happens, I’m going to make sure that nothing touches you again. Not without going through me first. I’m not leaving you ever again. You understand?”

Although Georgina nods, the sadness in her gaze is all I need to know that she’s struggling with accepting my word at face value. It only serves to laden my regret when it comes to her.

“Promise me,” she whispers without looking away.

The words pound through my veins, setting my heart off into a wild thrum that only gets faster and faster the longer I hold her stare. The beautiful windows to her soul. Every time I look into it, it’s like being stuck in a cold room during a warm, sunny day. The heat and brightness of her soul looking back at me.

“I…” My chest squeezes as I touch the tip of my nose to hers, cupping her face while I pause.

There is nothing but peace and quiet. Complete and utter serenity. I can’t imagine ever being without her again. I will never be without her again. No matter what.

It’s just me and her.

My Swan.

My precious thing.

My Georgina.

“I love you.”

The window opens, and for the first time ever, the glorious sun touches my soul. So hot. So bright. It scorches every inch of my being with all there is of her. Like a Psalm unravelling through me. Green pastures and still waters. She is my comfort and my wrath. With her, I never want or need for anything. Georgina has restored my soul with her light and goodness, and I never want to be parted from her. I will never let her go ever again.

“I’ve broken every promise I’ve ever made you.” I kiss the corner of her mouth as fresh tears pool at her ducts. Shallow breaths quicken as her pulse gallops beneath my palm. “I’ll never break this one. No matter what. For anything or anyone.”

Sulky lips quiver as an overwhelmed flush spreads over her cheeks and her hand cups mine at her jaw. Crystalline tears trickle down her stunning profile.

“You’re my whole heart, and I love you so fucking much that it’s a sin to reduce it to three small words when what you mean to me exceeds an entire dictionary. It surpasses every moral. Transcends this whole fucking universe, Georgina.”
