“When they got Charles, you were the one having private tea with the Chief of Defence and his wife. I did wonder why Dad didn’t join you, but we all play our parts.”

“And it all has to end at some point.” Sarah shrugs like it’s just another thing, and before anyone can put hands on me, I push Laura into Francis.

I grasp Sarah’s throat tight enough that she blanches as white as milk when I plunge my knife into her forearm as it sits on the armrest. “It ends now.”

“Here’s how it’ll play out.” Casper blows out a gritted breath. “While he will torture you with pain until you break and give us what we need, I will then make you watch as I rip your daughter apart. I will make her cry and beg for mercy, and I will show her none.”

“Don’t worry though, I won’t kill you for a long time. I’ll keep you alive long enough that the vision of Lucy dying will make you yearn for your own demise. It will be the last eight fucking years on motherfucking steroids. Groundhog fucking day again…and ag—”

“We got something!” Leo runs into the room with a laptop in his hands. “The traffic cameras are a bust, but…”

He sets the laptop down on the desk, and Cooper pulls out his phone. “All of her locations are stored in the maps app. Anywhere mummy has been will be on her phone.”

“And cloud,” Leo adds, grinning at Laura. “Thanks.”

She nods, looking up from the muddied box on the desk, looking stricken as she holds up a foreign office sealed file with the same number printed on it as the document in the email.

“She’s telling the truth.” Laura blows out a breath.

While Leo takes the file from her, I take the list of coordinates from the stored locations on Sarah’s phone, and while Casper and I go through each of them, there are only two that stand out. Only one journey from the day of Harry’s death that’s odd.

“Your GPS puts you at Number 10 at around the time of Harry’s death.”

“It really was you.” Laura sighs, leaning over the desk as though she’s about to pass out.

“You were at my place the night Harry was found, why?” I ask, and when she shrugs, my hand flies across her face with a wet pop as a trail of blood flies through the air. There’s something about the way she looks over my shoulder that reminds me of the way Georgina did the same when I took her home from dinner. “It was you. Georgina saw you.”

The more we scroll through the locations, the clearer the pattern becomes. It’s not a one-off—the location history puts her in or around my place so much that it’s a favourite location.

“Fuck,” Cooper spits. “It’s the house.”

“What?”

“Let’s go. I’ll explain on the way,” he tells me, heading out of the office.

“Lucian and I will stay here and handle this.” Francis stands in front of me, stopping me from leaving as Christopher comes up behind me, with Leo following Casper out of the office. “Brothers. You get George out and forget the rest. Don’t. Be. Reckless. Let the team do their bit. You understand me?”

“I’m not done with her.” It’s the only reply I give him before I walk out of there with Christopher on my tail.

Casper and Leo are already gone by the time we get into Cooper’s Range.

“Speak,” I bark at him.

“Georgina always mentioned how the builder outside the Number 19 gave her the heebie-jeebies. The guy stands outside smoking all the time; I put it down to the fucker being your typical fucking builder…”

“Fuck, I should’ve seen this sooner. I should’ve…fuck! All that fucking time I spent watching the feeds, hacking into the traffic cameras…”

My insides are vibrating so fucking hard that it’s rattling my brain. The only thought is the silly prayer my grandmother used to make us say before bed when she was staying.

Mary, Mother of grace, Mother of mercy, shield me from the enemy and receive me at the hour of my death. Amen.

Mary, Mother of grace, Mother of mercy, shield me from the enemy and receive me at the hour of my death. Amen.

“I’m sorry,” Christopher tells me. “You were right about Grandad.”

“Keep your fucking apology,” I snap at him.

“We’re going to get to Georgina, and she’s going to be okay.”
