Seb and Kate would be my next port of call, but they’re in Malibu taking care of wedding arrangements. I’m screwed. The best I can do is help Summer get set up for tonight, maybe close the rooftop bar for tonight. Even if it’ll incur a loss, it means that the staff can help Summer run the main bar.

“Everything okay, boss man?” she asks, handing East a slice of pear that she’s peeled for him.

“Yeah.”

“Really?” The tip of her head as she asks makes it obvious that the conversation with Ellen didn’t go unnoticed.

“I need to figure out the staffing situation for tonight. Easton’s sitter is out of town and…”

“You’re sorta screwed?”

“Majorly.”

Cleaning her hands on a damp rag, Summer picks Easton up and sits him on the bar top, handing him a slice of apple this time. While she watches him nibble on the fruit, she tugs at the skirt of her dress. It’s not indecently short, but enough so that her slender thighs are in view.

My eyes follow the sinuous line of her shapely legs, from her ankles to the hem of her dress and then higher, until our eyes meet again.

The sky blue of her dress reminds me of her bright blue polish a couple of weeks back. The memory brings back the warm ghost of her touch, and my heart picks up its unsteady pace when she sucks her lip into her mouth with a cute twitch of her nose.

“Mac should be ready to come back. I saw him yesterday, and you can barely see the wound anymore.”

“You saw Mac?” The question blurts from my mouth before I’ve even finished the thought for myself. “What? Are the two of you friends? Or…or something?”

“Parker…” Pausing at Easton’s grumbles for “More, Summah. More apple,” Summer cuts another slice and peels it. Her hand is trembling when she gives it to my son with one of her big fucking smiles that mesmerizes me.

“So?”

“We work together and live in the same neighborhood,” she finally replies, tucking a fiery wave behind her ear so that the rainbow cuff is on show along with the other multiple piercings, each a different colored stone.

What does that mean?

I’m trying to read her expression and what her reply means. It doesn’t answer my question in the slightest. In fact, it sounds like she’s trying to avoid answering it.

Why?

Is there something between them? Does she like him?

Is that why they always end up in the same bar?

“We bumped into each other at the grocery store,” she states, breaking the silence, with her hand flattening beneath the curve of her breasts.

Quickly, I deviate my gaze back to East, thumbing the drool from his chin as he continues happily munching on the apple.

“I’m sure he’d step in tonight.”

“No, that’s fine.” No fucking way! “I’ll work something out.”

Internally, I make note to revise the roster. Swap shifts around and freshen things up. Keep Mac well away from Summer.

“The only other option is to close the roof bar.” The baffled expression on her face has me searching for any other option available.

I’m about to switch staff around and call Mac when Harrison walks through the door.

“East, my man!” he croons, lifting Easton up in the air and dodging the string of drool and the chunk of apple that falls out of his mouth as my son shrieks, “Harrison!”

Setting his sight on Summer, Harrison grins. “Looking good, sunshine.” He picks a wedge of orange from the fruit board and then bites down on it, smiling so that Easton laughs at his baboon face.

What the fuck is wrong with all these assholes hitting on her? And why is he using my kid to flirt with my staff?
