As the duo croons about their song on the radio, she threads her fingers with mine, taking my other hand in hers. It’s not long before we’re both swaying and my heartbeat is pounding, heating every pore that sparks with our contact.

With every move, her scent burns hotter in my lungs, and the gold smolder of her eyes draws me closer until we’re flush to one another and my hand slips from hers, anchoring on the curve of her hip while hers molds to my shoulder. I don’t know if it’s me or her or both of us, but the tremble between us makes it impossible to catch my breath.

My hand slips to the top of her ass, bringing her impossibly closer. It’s torture, and yet I can’t pull myself away. It feels too good to hold her. The warmth of her body flush to mine is a remedy I didn’t know existed until this moment.

I don’t know when my feet stop moving or when I release her other hand to cup her face. I don’t know when her hands press to my chest because all I see is the light in her eyes. All I feel is the thrum of her pulse coursing through me. Intoxicating. Addictive.

“Summer…” The rumble of her name tumbles from my lips, and I don’t know what it means or what it does to her because her smile falters, sobering completely while we stand in silence. Her eyes burn with the same need blazing in my veins.

“Parker…”

There’s never been anything so damn stunning in my sight. When I run my thumb over Summer’s lightly glossed lips, she lets out a tremulous breath that punctuates the sudden silence.

“Please…please, Parker.” Hooded eyes flutter as she rolls onto her toes, and I lower, the tip of my nose ghosting the gorgeous slope of hers. “Please,” she repeats, begging for the same thing that my lips yearn for.

“You’re beautiful,” I tell her. “So beautiful…” But I can’t…

I can’t kiss her, knowing that she deserves better. She’s so young, with so much ahead of her, and I can’t dull her spark. Holding her face between both hands, I curse myself for allowing things to get this far. For being the reason her eyes are brimming with tears.

“We can’t.”

“Why?” The question trembles from her. “I know you want me.”

I do. More than she’ll ever understand. To the point of insanity because, looking at her right now, I can still picture her sleeping on my couch. The scent she left on Easton’s blanket still taunts me.

“Why?” Summer repeats.

Pulling back, I force my hands to my sides, even though I want to etch every dip and curve of her body onto my palms.

“Parker,” she calls as I grab the safe bags and head for the office. “Just tell me why. Please.”

After this fuckup, I owe her that much.

Turning to face her, I find her standing right where I left her seconds ago, her hands laced over her waist as though her insides are about to fall out of her body.

“You’re so young.”

“And? I’m not a child,” she retorts, taking a step forward.

“I can’t take advantage of you.”

As if what I’m saying makes no sense, she shakes her head. “What?”

“I’m your boss, Sum…you’re my employee and…”

“And?”

“And it just can’t happen.”

Before I go back on my word, I walk away. Taking care of the safe, I take a moment to compose myself before heading up.

Every second that passes constricts around my chest like a vise squeezing all the life out of me. Guilt has my thoughts roaring in my head. I hurt her. I hurt the one person who never fails to make me forget all the shit in my life with a simple smile. But it’s better this way. It’s for the best that she hurts now than if things evolved.

The instant I’m through the door, Harrison blows out a long whistle at the sight of me.

“I hope you compensate with overtime at least,” he says, heading to the kitchen and coming back out with a couple of beers. “Dude, I’m not sure how you could fuck shit up with Summer. That girl was a sure thing.”

“Drop it, Harry.” Taking a beer from him, I head straight into Easton’s room to check on him.
