“Yes,” Percival croaks with an audible swallow. “You should know, she tried to call Simon on the burner phone. The message she left is impossible to understand through her cries. They were chasing her, Henry, like a dog.”

There’s a long moment where Henry only drives. His eyes are glued to the road ahead as he appears to be deep in thought.

“This needs to end.”

“Agreed,” Percival says solemnly.

“Eve had a situation with Eddowes,” Henry tells him.

“Catherine?”

“Yes. I need Luke Sterling at Hush ASAP to check on Eve, and I want Warren on the phone when I get there. Simon and Julian need to be ready to deal with the Elizabeth situation. I’m done with this war, Percival.”

“Yes, Your Grace,” Percival replies, reading the hard tone of Henry’s voice.

“It’s time to wipe the cunts out.”

One of his hands rests over mine on my thigh as he puts his foot down through the empty backstreets. My head is hazy, and the wound on my arm is beginning to hurt with the jostle of the car over speed bumps. However, the one thing that keeps my tears at bay is Henry’s unrelenting grip on my hand when I flip my palm up to his.

All I can think of is the conversation with Jess earlier today. If anything happened to Henry, I don’t know what I would do. How I would carry on. I’m watching his thoughts whir a hundred miles a second with the clench of his jaw and his heavy breaths. There’s so much anger. So much rage. Pure destruction blazes in his dark eyes.

“Eve,” he murmurs.

“Henry,” I whisper back.

With a sideward glance, he says, “It’s us or them.”

“I pick us.” I pick him. I pick his life and our love. The rest can be damned.

I’m not good. I’m not righteous. And I will not be miserable without him.

“I wondered what kind of person it would make me to be the woman behind you…”

“Beside me,” he says, correcting me swiftly.

“Beside you,” I echo. “I wondered if it would make me a killer too…a monster…”

Pausing in front of the gates leading to Hush, he asks, “And? What does it make you?”

“When I’m with you, beside you, Your Grace,” I breathe, pressing a kiss to our intertwined hands, “with you, I’m untouchable.”

“So you understand what happens now.” He drives slowly towards the tree in front of the club. “You understand what I must do.”

“Do your worst,” I tell him, gripping his hand as tightly while I hug it to my heart. “Be your worst.”

If his worst is what will keep him with me, then it’s his worst I will love the most, and it’s his worst that is the best part of him.

CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

HENRY

Eve is asleep in the suite down the hall. The sedatives Luke gave her will make sure she rests for the next few hours while I take care of business.

“I’m getting Warren on the phone now,” Percival tells me as I finish filling Ryan in on what’s happened.

“Well, you fucked up, didn’t you, bro?” he scoffs at Simon.

After the shit he gave him when he turned up with Luke, I don’t know how well these two will get on together, but right now, it’s the least of my concerns.
