“Those are stretch marks on your lower abdomen,” I stated.

“They don’t hurt.”

“Your lower abdomen is tender and swollen. I’d like to do an ultrasound and run some more tests.”

“Is that necessary?”

“Yes,” I replied flatly.

“Can I leave after?”

“Let’s just see what the results are first and go from there. I see you haven’t listed an emergency contact. Is there someone I can call for you?”

“No. There’s no one.”

“Alright, Ms. Davis. I will send a nurse in shortly.”

“Thank you, Doctor.”

Leaving the young woman, I headed to the nurses’ station as Jessica walked over with Stacy, a triage nurse.

“What’s wrong, Lidi?” Jess asked while I looked back at the room I had just left. Shaking my head, I whispered, “I don’t know, but something isn’t right. My patient in room 213 said she was in the accident, but she’s barely got a scratch on her. Yet, she’s running a fever and her belly is tender.”

“Maybe she was a walk-in and got mixed up with all the chaos the other day?”

“It’s possible,” Stacy added. “There was so much foot traffic that day. It was nuts.”

“I want a full blood panel on her, including a CT scan and ultrasound. My gut is telling me something else is wrong here.”

“You want me to do it?” Jess offered.

“Would you, please, and call me if you find anything?”

Taking the chart from me, Jessica smiled. “Sure thing. Now go eat something and take a break.”

“I’m fine, Jess.”

“Stacy,” Jess sighed. “Lidi is your patient for the next ten minutes. See that she eats, drinks, and gets off her feet.”

“On it, boss.” Stacy smiled wickedly. “You heard the boss, Doc. Move it.”

“You know I’m your boss, right?”

“Not right now you’re not. And Jess scares the crap out of me. You, I’ve seen drunk. Let’s go.”

Groaning, I followed the annoying woman and did as I was told.

I was sleeping in the on-call room when someone knocked loudly on the door sometime later. Jolting from the bed, I opened the door to find Jessica standing there. “Sorry, Lidi, but Ms. Davis’ lab work is back. Thought you’d want to see it right away.”

Taking the paperwork from her, I quickly read the results.

“Shit!” I gasped, running for the woman’s room, shouting, “Get an O.R. ready and tell Dr. Robinette I need her help!”

I was being gowned and gloved when Dr. Robinette walked into the O.R. “Tell me what I need to know?”

“Patient is a young woman with a partial prolapsed placenta. Patient presented as an accident survivor. No one thought to do a vaginal exam.”

“The baby?”
