I hear the first ring and hope starts to rise that she might pick up, but with each ring, my hope morphs into fear and guilt. The intrusive thoughts come back in full force.

Something isn’t right here.

Something happened to her.

Something is wrong.

She’s in danger.

Eight calls have rung through to voicemail when Rosie’s contact pops up on my screen.

“No luck?” I practically hiss the words even though she doesn’t deserve my ire.

“No, and you can shove your attitude back down your throat, mister.”

“Sorry. Something’s wrong though.”

“Okay. Phones weren’t the answer. Next plan.”

I hear movement in the background and grumbles, which I’m sure are from Rosie’s current partner or fling or whatever.

“I’m sorry for waking you.”

“No, don’t be. This is what we do for friends. If you think something is wrong, then I’m right here with you until we figure it out.”

“Yeah, thanks, Rosie.” My foot taps incessantly. I hear the phone jostle on her end as she gets dressed.

“Okay, I’ll head straight to Bliss since I’m closer. How about you stop by her apartment to see if she stopped there and then meet me at the club.”

“Good. Yeah. I can do that.”

“Hey, Jay Bird?”

“Yeah?”

“Breathe. It’s gonna be okay.”

Something in me says it won’t be.

I find Julia’s dog, Spencer, napping on the bed at the apartment. I give him a quick pet after taking him outside, which is more for my benefit than his, and a treat before leaving for the club.

During the drive over, I can’t stop thinking about the events of the night. Every detail is on replay in my mind like a movie on the silver screen. The way she looked in her iridescent dress. Her bright smile that lasted through the night, even after Chad pulled a gun on her.

Pulling into the club’s parking lot, I immediately spot Rosie’s truck. So at least she made it here. Next, I spot Julia’s car.

That’s not good.

I’m out of my truck before it even fully settles into park and head straight for the entrance. The door is unlocked, but it’s expected since Rosie, and hopefully Julia, is here.

But why wouldn’t Rosie have called me?

When I enter the main room, I don’t expect to see a rumpled, pacing Rosie with her dark umber hair in a messy bun, dressed in Star Wars pajama bottoms, a tank top, and dalmatian slippers.

“Oh, Jay!” She’s startled, and unease takes over. “I think you’re right. Come with me.”

“Rosie…”

“Follow me, Jay.”
