“Fuck. Okay, what’s the girl’s name? I’ll see what I can do.” He pulls out his pocket notebook.

“Juliana Morgan.”

“Well, fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck,” he chants. “Hold on, I need to make a call.”

Pulling out his phone, he dials and puts it on speaker.

“Detective Bacon speaking.”

“Gracie, hey, it’s Quinn. Are you still working on the Bliss kidnapping case?”

This is not good.

“Yeah, and it’s a pain in the ass. A friend of hers calls every day looking for an update. I have nothing to give him. Still calls back like clockwork though. Honestly, the lieutenant is pushing me to drop the case already, and it’s only been two weeks.”

“I might be able to help you out with that one.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You know the Mathieson case? Drugs. Trafficking. Well, I was talking with my guy, and he says a girl came through. Name sounded familiar, so I called you.”

“I’m on the edge of my seat.”

“Any chance your girl is named Juliana Morgan?”

“Shit.” She sighs over the phone, and we hear the rustling of papers. “Is he with you?”

“Yeah.”

“Hold on. I’m pulling up her info so he can verify.”

We wait in silence while more rustling and typing noises come over the phone.

“Okay. Juliana ‘Julia’ Morgan. Blonde. Blue eyes. Five-foot-nine. I’m guessing this 180 pounds on her license isn’t right anymore based on the friend’s description. Sound like her?”

I nod in affirmation.

“Yeah, that’s her,” my friend says.

“Shit. If she’s involved in your case… It complicates things. A lot.”

Complicated indeed.

“Look, get back here, and we can talk with the higher-up’s to see what can be done. I guess I finally get to give the friend good news though. Speak of the devil.” She sighs. “I gotta go.”

The detective hangs up, and we stare at each other.

“Looks like you might get your miracle, bud,” he says.

“Maybe.”

No matter how much I try, I can’t help the hope and relief building in my chest. If they get the okay, I can get her out somewhere safe. I won’t have to worry about her anymore. Her problems would be off my plate.

But do I really want that? I don’t think so. There’s a corner of my mind that has already started to imagine what life would be like if I followed her.

I’ll be okay with whatever plan they come up with. I have to be.

As long as she’s safe.
