Move Like U Stole It

Ember

Cywaslikea kid on Christmas when that guy, Griffin, handed him the keys to this Aston Martin. There’s a particular high any time we finish an assignment, but he’s especially enjoying this specific perk.

Who knew Sage’s ex was such a car guy? It makes sense though by the description she gave us of the narcissistic asshole. Seems he likes money, no matter how ill-gotten. He likes to spend it and show it off too.

It’s kind of kismet we helped Sage and her son only a month ago and now are hired to come and rescue another woman from the same man. The dude seriously has some issues if people are fleeing him like this.

Glancing back into the back seat, I quietly observe the girl… Juliana.

She seemed so alive when she was around that guy, but it’s like she shut down since we took off. Based on what I know about Arrick and the Mathieson Enterprises operations, I’m sure she’s gone through hell. Her friend’s concerns are definitely justified, but he’d described her so differently from how she appears.

I understand hardship and loss. Pain and violence are no strangers either in this life. It’s how I met Cy. How we came together. It was love at first gunshot.

This girl seems lost in a different kind of way than I’ve ever experienced. Only time will tell how she’ll come out of this.

Looking at her, there’s a certain quality I can’t quite name. It’s like when you buy a candle but never light it. There’s a purpose, but its value is placed on its existence and potential rather than the fulfillment of potential.

I’d be curious to see what this woman looks like as her most authentic self. I’d bet she’s a force to be reckoned with.

As we drive, I can’t help but continue to glance back at her. Every time I do, she’s sunken deeper into herself. She’s closing herself off from everything in anticipation of some sort of malicious yet unknown force.

Every glance has an odd concern growing in my chest for this woman. It’s not something I normally experience with people. Cy is one of the few people in this world I’ve any real attachment to. We’ve been together for thirteen years, and I know him almost as well as I know myself.

This unfamiliar feeling is kind of unsettling but only a little unwanted.

Pulling into the garage space at the firehouse we’ve made our home base, I look back at her. At some point, she fell asleep, exhausted from recent events.

“Cy, we should probably call Sage. She’s a doctor?”

“Why? We were hired to get her and get her back to the friend in one piece,” Cy grumbles.

Idiot clearly hasn’t caught up yet. I love him, but sometimes he’s slower than molasses.

“I don’t think we can do that yet. We found her once easily enough. Nothing to say they won’t rinse and repeat. Plus, clearly, she went through something back there. She looks even worse than when we tracked down Sage and Kieran.”

“Fine then, call Sage. Get her to help, but I’m done here.”

Maybe Cy’s got more feelings than he’s letting on. He’s not normally so gruff towards people. Especially not clients. Quiet, maybe, but not dismissive.

“Can you at least carry her in while I get everything unpacked? I’ll call Sage and see when she can be here. She still in the Galleria safehouse?”

Looks like I’ll only be getting nods and grunts from now on, but I take it.

Halfway to the elevator with Juliana in his arms, Cy calls back, “And call the friend. I want him out of our shit. The flower girl who started this shit too. Pair of ’em are annoying as fuck.”

I huff. His mood isn’t making any sense, but I don’t have time to worry about that. After being together for thirteen years, you think you know everything about your partner, but sometimes they surprise you. This is one of those times where I leave him to sulk on his own for a while.

I call Sage first, wanting to put off the call to the friend. After a few rings, she picks up.

“Hey, is everything okay? Do we need to move again? Does Kieran need to stay home from camp today?”

“Nah, no need to worry. But we do need your help. We picked up a girl, and she’s in bad shape.”

“Oh, Lord, of course. Can you send someone to come get us like last time?”
