“Tell me about it?” He asks gently.

“I woke up in a bed,” I start slowly. “I wasn’t tied up. So I knew I’d been moved.”

My hand reaches to cup Jay’s jaw when he clenches it at my retelling. I can tell I need to rush through this story. Otherwise, something is going to break. Either he would break something, or I would break down.

“There was a guy, and he brought me to his room there. And he took care of me. Tried to clean me up and feed me.” I laugh at the memory. “He was kinda cute.”

Jay’s eyebrow rises. How does he do that with one eyebrow?

“He was physically cute. Well… hot, really. And he was kind. He offered me something to eat, but I told him I was allergic, and he went into this kind of frenzy. It was sweet. I don’t know why, but he wanted to help me. He left to talk with someone at some point, and for that week I mostly slept. But he was kind, and I felt safe with him. I know it makes no sense, but I did. I do.”

I blush at the memory of Griffin’s hands on me. How his lips and tongue did magical things to my body. How he made me forget for a while and distracted me from pain.

“I kind of slept with him. Well… he went down on me.”

There is no judgment on Jay’s face. I feel the need to be honest with him, especially after what happened between us.

“You think maybe you were just coping?” I blush because he’s right. He always is. “It’s okay, Julia. You had a lot going on.” His hands cup my face, and our foreheads meet to rest on one another. “If he helped you, then that’s all I care about. If he hurt you, I’ll kill the bastard.”

Rocking back at his anger, I see him in a new light. How he must have felt over the past weeks. How he found a new drive because of it.

“No! Goddess, no. Nothing like that. He was nice. I trust him.” I search for some way to explain. How do you explain to one soulmate that you found another? “He said he was a cop, right? I mean, all cops are bastards. But he wanted to help.”

“Sounds like he did a lot more than help,” Jay grumbles.

“Jay!” I slap him playfully.

“What? Can you blame me? From your description, some hot cop with a savior complex helps you out of a kidnapping situation.” His head drops back then. “Gods. No. Not like that. I’m not judging you. It sounds like he kinda took advantage of you.”

“No, Jay. Nothing like that. If anything, I took advantage of him.”

“Riiight.”

“Jay, seriously. Griffin is a good boy.”

The bewildered look Jay gives me catches my attention.

“Did you say his name is Griffin?” he asks.

“Yeah…”

“Shit. This makes so much more sense.” He runs his fingers through his dark hair and sighs before standing to pace the room. “The detective assigned to your case said they were pressured to close it because they didn’t have the resources anymore. At that point, I already knew you were here, so I was fine with it. But the detective said there was another guy who was asking questions. The woman basically warned me about him like he was a little off his rocker.”

Jay turns to face me, and the determination in his expression is clear.

“The guy reached out to me. I couldn’t exactly appear to stop caring that you were missing even though I knew where you were, and I certainly wasn’t going to tell this guy. We met up for coffee, but something was off about the whole thing. He seemed way too invested, and he called you Jules.”

“Oh.”

“His name was Griffin. I have his card somewhere with his number.” Jay turns to search through his stuff strewn on the floor.

My heart is hammering in my chest. What if this is him?

“He promised to find me,” I whisper.

“What?” Jay turns back to me.

“Griffin, when Cy and Ember took me away. He promised he would find me.”
