“Not worried. Just think y’all bein’ stupid.” Jay chuckles at that, but I ignore him. “Fine. But I’m in charge. Every step of the way. Got it?”

“Yes, sir!” He salutes mockingly. I don’t miss the wink he directs at Juliana though.

“So we’re doing this?” The girl’s words are timid but clear.

“Guess so, ti dife.”

Ember gives me a knowing look, but I ignore them.

“Tèt zozo, call the guy. We leave in thirty,” I say.

”Is that me?” Jay asks. “What does that even mean?”

“Dick head.” Ember laughs.

“Well, that’s oddly affirming.” The guy chuckles.

I leave the room, shaking my head. Seems I can’t even be a proper asshole to the guy.

Halfway down the hall on my way to the gym, I feel a hand clasp my own, and I spin to confront the person before relaxing when I realize it’s Juliana.

“Thank you.” Our hands still connected, she gives me a squeeze, which travels straight to my chest.

“Not doin’ this outta the kindness of my heart, ti dife. Just know you’d be a brat about it if we didn’t.”

“Yeah, but I’d be your brat.” Taking a step towards me, I realize how tall she is. She’s formidable. A warrior if I’ve ever seen one. Her curves are in all the right places. I resist the urge to touch her, let my hands wander. And she’s flirting with me. No mistaking that.

I shouldn’t want her.

“Gotta grab my stuff.” I release her hand and turn.

“Yeah, of course.”

Thirty minutes later, Jay and I are in the SUV on our way to Bliss. The cop was summoned, and based on Jay’s side of the conversation, the guy is more than eager to talk.

It’s the middle of the day, but there’s already a car parked in the lot when we arrive at the club. The guy leaning against it immediately pushes off and moves towards us. Car parked, we both get out, and Jay walks over to meet the guy.

“Let’s go inside.”

He nods, but his energy is off… for a cop. He’s like a puppy dog. It’s kinda cute. Big formidable cop with tattoos covering every visible inch of his body, and he’s practically bouncing with energy.

Barely two steps into the club, he jumps straight in.

“So you wanted to see me. Is it about Jules? Is she okay?”

Oh, it’s Jules, is it?

Jay looks to me for direction, but I shrug. He’s on his own here. This wasn’t my idea.

“Why don’t we go to her office,” Jay says. I’m going to snap the guy’s wrist if he keeps stalling.

Safely in the office, Jay starts up. “You need to come clean, Griffin. Why are you so invested in this? You’re not even assigned to her case. The case is fucking closed.”

The guy, Griffin, glances over at me. He’s still unaware that Jay already knows. His hand reaches up to run through his dark hair. A nervous habit, probably. Benefit of not doing introductions is I’m still an unknown, and unknowns are threatening. I can clearly tell I’m having the desired effect on this kid. Sure, we’d met the one time, but it seems like he’s purposefully avoiding my gaze.

“We can’t trust you if you don’t fill us in,” Jay continues.

You can see the debate going on in the kid’s mind.
