“I’m glad you enjoyed yourself.” I smile.

We walk through the property hand in hand toward the villas in silence, Alvie only a few steps behind us.

When we reach the door to her villa, she takes the room key from me and unlocks it. Turning back to me, she reaches out for her bag, and I hand it over slowly, trying to drag out my last moment with her before we part.

She leans inside the villa and sets down the bag just inside the door before turning back to face me again, just as reluctant to let the night end as I am.

“Let me know when you’re back at school,” I say, stepping in close to her and backing her up against the doorframe. “And when you’re coming home.”

I kiss her again softly before turning to leave.

When I glance back, her fingers are lightly pressing into her lips, and I swear there are stars in her eyes.

Chapter 8

Naomi

Idid remember to choke down some ibuprofen along with two full glasses of water before tucking myself into bed, surrounding myself with a pile of blankets and pillows. I slept better than I have in years though, my entire body relaxed in a way it has never experienced before.

But the morning after the engagement party, I woke up to the sound of Selene pounding on my door. Waking up, I was grateful for no hangover or lingering tiredness from the late night out. I was then immediately dragged out of my room to get brunch with her and others who were still at the resort.

Much to my disappointment, Bex was not in attendance.

The rest of the day Sunday, we spent lounging by the pool, reading, and tanning, or avoiding all sunlight in my case.

Monday came too quickly, and now, driving back to school and away from the club, my heart is aching.

The country music blasting through my speakers really isn’t helping my mood, but I can’t bring myself to turn off the sad melodies. My mind is fixated on the events of Saturday night, me on the cross, meeting Bex and Alvie, and the kiss which had me floating on cloud nine.

Now, trapped in my head with the road before me that seems to go on forever, I can’t stop my thoughts from straying back to her.

In desperate need of a distraction, I command my phone to call Selene.

“Miss me already?” she says after she picks up on the second ring.

“You know it,” I reply, glad she can’t see the smile that’s snuck onto my face.

“How much longer do you have on the road?” she asks.

I glance down at my dashboard navigation. “Maps says about two hours.”

“Damn. You made it longer than I was guessing.”

I hear Gunnar’s voice in the background. “You owe me twenty.”

“Oh hush, you Viking. I’m talking to my bestie,” she snaps before mellowing out. “What’s up?”

“Nothin’ much. Just driving and got bored.” I shrug, despite her not being able to see me.

“And in your head a little?”

She knows me far too well.

I never told her about how my night ended, which in itself feels wrong, but for now it feels like something I need to keep to myself.

“Maybe a little,” I say, my voice trailing off as my thoughts once again stray to the memory of Bex’s lips pressing against my own, her hands wrapped possessively in my hair.

“In which case, I’m going to talk your ear off for the next few hours about wedding plans and events,” she chirps.
