Silent tears turn into sobbing breaths until I’m gasping for air.

Everything feels wrong, and I’m wrong for thinking there’s any value in thinking otherwise.

Once more, it’s the ding of my phone with a message notification that snaps me out of my spiraling thoughts.

I take a few deep breaths to calm myself and wipe away the tears that have streaked my face.

Bex: @Naomi, what are you up to tonight? Alvie is abandoning me.

Alvie: I’ve told you at least 10 times. I’m going to a meeting.

Bex: See? Abandoning me.

Naomi: I was supposed to go to the library tonight to start researching my dissertation project. But my advisor shot down all my proposals.

Bex: What? How? It’s your project, right?

Naomi: Yeah. But he has to sign off on everything.

Bex: That’s bullshit. I’m sorry.

Naomi: It is what it is. :upside-down smiley face emoji:

Naomi: But I’m going back to the drawing board.

Bex: Boo. That’s no fun.

Bex: Just skip that and come hang out with me. You deserve a break.

Naomi: :laughing emoji: Totally, I’ll be there in like four hours.

Bex: Coming from Dallas? More like 5. We’re down in Victoria.

Naomi: So much more convenient. :laughing emoji:

Bex: Seriously. Keep me company tonight? Otherwise, I’ll be all alone. :sobbing emoji:

Naomi: Poor baby. I guess I have to then.

Bex: Perfect. Order food in and we will have a date night since I’m single now.

Alvie: Don’t you dare start, Bex.

Bex: Love you! Have a good meeting. :kissy face

Bex: @Naomi Let me know when you get home. We can hop on FaceTime for our date.

I’m grinning the whole way home, excited for my date with Bex tonight.

I go through my routine of checking in with Selene and seeing what chaos she’s left in my Discord inbox before hopping in the shower to rinse off the day. Letting myself relax into the pattern of my hair and skincare routine, I slowly start to relax.

When I’m out of the shower, I’ve checked my messages with Selene once more to find her ranting about how expensive flowers are and whether or not she should have a full band or DJ for the reception.

There’s also a message directly from Bex.

Bex: I’m making pad Thai. What are you ordering for dinner?

Naomi: I’ll probably just heat up something from the freezer. My stipend doesn’t cover eating out much.
