"Yeah. Like you and Gunnar are so much better." Naomi laughs. "Bye, Alvie."

"Bye, Naomi," he says and backs into Sour Patch’s stall to brush her out.

"Okay. I'm back," I say, returning my attention to my phone and heading out of the barn. "We were talking about boots."

Our conversation continues my whole walk back to the ranch house, the three of us bantering back and forth as they try on different pairs of boots and look at other accessories in the boutique. Despite the distance, we have fun and my stomach aches from laughter by the time I reach the house.

"I'm home," I tell Naomi as I listen to Gunnar finish up their purchase in the background. "Want to call me again tonight when you get home."

"Yeah." She sighs, clearly exhausted from the shopping excursion.

"Maybe take a nap when you get home?" I suggest.

"Yeah, I may do that," she says with drooping eyes.

"You're coming to visit next weekend, right?" Selene asks Naomi, and my ears perk up.

"Yeah, I'll be down for the long weekend," she replies.

"Perfect. You can stay with us, then maybe we’ll all meet at The Playground for lunch? Bex, y’all want to do lunch?"

"Of course," I reply.

"Perfect. You can stay with us. We can meet up at The Playground for lunch, then stay the night and go to the club?" Selene suggests.

"Yeah. That works for me." She smiles into her camera.

"Me too," I say wistfully.

There’s a quiet that settles between us as we look at each other through the phone, both with silly grins spread across our faces.

“Okay. We need to get out of here. I'm starving," Selene says, interrupting our moment.

Naomi laughs. "We don't want a hangry Lena on our hands. That's a nightmare."

I giggle. "Y'all have fun."

There's another moment of silence that passes, and despite all the miles that separate us, it feels like I'm a breath away from Naomi.

"I'll talk to you later, Nay," I say.

"Later." She sighs. "Bye."

"Bye."

The call ends, and I look around the empty house before breaking out in a squeal.

She's just so cute.

Chapter 10

Alvaro

Watching Bex over the past few weeks and seeing how she responds to the blossoming friendship she’s growing with Naomi is a beautiful sight. Her smile is contagious, and the giddiness she experiences with every text and phone call with her new object of infatuation brings light to my heart.

It doesn’t feel like that long, but it’s been a whole week since I came home after taking care of the trail ride horses to find Bex staring glassy-eyed into space, smiling like a cat who got the cream.

I can barely keep up with the messages that fly back and forth between them in the group chat. They talk about everything and nothing all at once. I have no idea how you can talk to someone that consistently. When does anyone have the time?
