I10 is straight as fuck, and it seems never-ending with all of the traffic that’s crowding the widest highway in America.

Selene and Gunnar were amazing, helping me pack up my apartment to move me out last weekend, but I’ve been sulking all week, unsure what I’m supposed to do now. So, they convinced me that we needed a weekend at The Playground to relax and have some fun.

Plus, I’ll get to see Alvie and Bex when we get there because they’re evidently doing an expo demonstration of rope suspension this weekend.

Selene: Alvie’s in the hospital.

I step on my brakes to slow down to exit the highway and stop in a parking lot when my car dashboard alerts me to the new text from Selene.

I respond immediately.

Naomi: What! When?

Selene: This is the closest hospital to them.

Selene has shared a map location with you.

Naomi: SELENE, I NEED MORE INFORMATION THAN THAT!

Selene: I don’t *have* more information, Nay. I just know where they’re going. So get your ass over there.

I pull off the highway and into the Katy location of Buc-ee’s and pull up the location that Selene shared.

“Shit.” I groan, looking at the map on my screen.

It’s going to take me almost two hours to get there.

I bring up Bex’s contact and try calling her, but it just goes to voicemail. I try again but she still doesn’t pick up.

“Fuck it.”

Naomi: I’m gonna drive straight there.

Selene: Good luck, Nay.

I put my phone down, press start on the map directions, and take my car out of park. It takes everything in me not to speed too much as I take off down the feeder road on my new route.

My music is blasting through the speakers, my sad attempt at distracting myself for the two hours it will take me to get down to the hospital in Victoria.

The drive passes about as quickly as I can hope for, and thankfully no one stops me on my trip.

I pull up to the hospital around nine, and with the sun just setting on the horizon, it looks like there’s a bright halo of light surrounding the building.

Fear grips my chest as a squad truck peals into the ambulance only entrance with its lights and sirens on.

I grab my purse out of the passenger seat and speedwalk to the emergency room entrance. A sweet-looking, older nurse greets me at the front desk with a smile.

“Hi, I’m looking for Alvaro Silva? He should have been admitted a few hours ago?”

“Oh. Are you his other daughter? Your sister came in with him earlier.” I blush at the thought. “They’re up on the second floor now. Room . . . 218.”

The woman smiles at me. One part of me wants to tear her a new one for making assumptions about my relationship to Alvie. The other, larger, part of me already has me moving in the direction of the elevators.

I get up to the second floor and am greeted by another nurse with white hair.

“Hi. Which direction to room 218?” I ask.

“Oh, Mr. Silva’s room. To your left, honey. Your mom went downstairs a bit ago, but she should be back soon.”
