She looks back over at me where I'm petting Beef Cake. "Do you want it to be more?"

"I don't know."

"Well, before you get ahead of yourself with that thought process, figure out what you want. Go from there. And I'm always here to talk if you need." She sits up abruptly. "Now, Gunnar gave me his credit card and said we should have a girls’ day. So, I fully plan on us spending up to his limit."

"Selene, you don't need his money. You have more than enough on your own.” I chuckle. “And I’m pretty sure that card doesn’t have a limit."

"Yeah. Sure. But it's more fun to spend his. I worked hard for my own. I want to keep it. And he wants me to do this."

"Well then, what's the plan?" I ask, propping myself up on my elbows when Beef Cake scurries off my chest.

"I'm thinking a full beauty routine. I already called ahead for appointments for nails and massages again. I'll ask about getting your hair trimmed, too, since you're clearly committed to it."

She continues to ramble off the plans she's made for our day, including a fancy by-appointment-only shopping trip and a dinner at some restaurant with month-long waiting list, while pulling out more appropriate clothing for me to wear.

We hurry through getting me ready and are out the door within thirty minutes.

Alvaro: Have fun today with Selene.

Naomi: Did you orchestrate this?

Alvaro: I sent her a text that you may need a pick-me-up. That's all. She did the rest.

I smile at his thoughtfulness.

Naomi: Thank you.

Chapter 27

Naomi

Despite the bulldozer methodology, Selene’s decision to go to The Playground was definitely the right choice. Our spa day yesterday lifted my mood and prepped me well for her plans. I am finally starting to understand what Selene means when she says that the club is the home of her second family when we settle in the next night.

When we arrive, the festivities are in full swing. People are on the dance floor, losing themselves in the thrum of the bass throughout the room. The bar is active with people getting their setups, and already there are couples heading upstairs to the play areas.

We make our way over to the area where we were for Selene’s engagement party, and immediately I spot Alvie and Bex. I wish I could say that I handled it well, but my first reaction to seeing them was to freeze in place then excuse myself to the restroom.

I’m hiding in one of the stalls, trying to regulate my breathing, when Selene’s voice rings through the echoing space.

“Come out, come out, whereever you are!” she sings, and I groan. “I know you’re in here, Nay. Just come out already.”

I sigh and unlock the door, revealing Selene, who’s scantily clad in lingerie that shows off her full figure.

“Tell me,” she commands, her face growing serious.

“I just can’t handle seeing them right now,” I confess. “It’s too much.”

“Look . . .” She sighs. “We’re here for you to have a good time. If you want them to leave, I think they would for you. But I think the more badass move is to just enjoy the night without them. Right?”

I look up at Selene in wonder. “How do you do that?”

“Do what?”

“Just . . . that. This all seems to come so easily to you. Like, navigating all this shit and relationships. You never doubt yourself or anything. You’re like . . . an adult. A real one.”

A loud laugh bursts out of her. “Take that back! I’m the furthest thing from being an adult. I’ve just gone through a lot of life already. I have like half a decade on you. Plus, even I go to therapy now.”

I scowl. “I am a therapist, Selene. It’s more than that. And don’t discount yourself.”
