Cam gets in and shivers. “I’m sorry, Nikki. They can be a lot to handle sometimes.”
“Oh, don’t be. They’re funny.” I smile at his worried face.
Brett laughs. “What did you expect, Costy? That’s the first time you’ve ever brought a girl to meet the team. Of course they weren’t going to go easy.”
First time?
“You’re saying he’s never brought a girlfriend to meet you guys?” I ask, shocked.
Brett shakes his head. “I’m saying he’s never kept someone around long enough to become his girlfriend to then bring to meet us.”
“Brett, shut up,” Cam begs him.
“What?” Brett shrugs. “Not my fault. I’m just speaking the truth. Clearly, you’re special to him, or you wouldn’t be here. I can tell you that. And he damn sure wouldn’t spend the few days off we get during the season to fly to you.”
My heart races, and my stomach flutters at his words. I knew Cam was a bit of a player. But I didn’t know I was the first girl he’d invited to meet everyone, let alone the first girlfriend they knew about.
Cam shoots Brett a glare through the rearview mirror, which seems to shut him up.
“Is that true?” I ask Cam as he pulls into a parking spot at what I’m guessing is their condo.
He throws the car into park and looks at me with such intensity. “Yes. Only you.”
He might have only said three words, but it felt like so much more. It’s only you who has met them. It’s only you who I have claimed as my girlfriend. It’s only you that I want.
“All right, I’m going to head inside before you guys start going at it right here,” Brett says, exiting the car.
I grab my purse and open my door, breaking the tension before Cam and I do just that.
As we walk toward the skyscraper of a building, I shoot Chloe a text.
Me: I’m staying at Cam’s tonight. See you in the morning?
She answers right away.
Chloe: YESSSSS!!! Oh, my pleas to the heavens have come true! Go have fun! Be safe! I want every detail tomorrow!!!
Me: OMG. You go have fun with your dad’s friend, LOL.
Chloe: Already on it! Don’t worry! Good night, babes! XOXO
Locking my phone, I drop it into my purse and focus on what’s right in front of me. Cam, Brett, and I make our way to the elevator and then their condo. When he opens the door, my jaw drops. It’s beautiful and surprisingly clean. I’ve seen almost every inch of this house on FaceTime, but it doesn’t come close to comparing to how it looks in person.
The floor is black marble with matching countertops. It’s modern and sleek, and it looks like the perfect bachelor pad. White cabinets line the kitchen with state-of-the-art appliances. I wonder how much cooking is actually done there.
“Your guys’ place is so nice,” I tell them as I kick my tennis shoes off.
“Thanks. I had it all to myself before Cam invited himself to live with me.” Brett chuckles.
“Shut the fuck up.” Cam laughs. “I did not. You practically begged me to.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Brett mocks as he walks off to some other part of the place.
“Do you want something to drink?” Cam asks.
“Water would be great.”
He nods and walks toward the stunning kitchen. When he reaches up to the top of a cabinet to grab a glass, his shirt and sweatshirt lift up, revealing a deep V carved in his hips and perfectly toned abs.
