She shakes her head. She’s not giving us much.

“I’m sure you’ve got some questions,” Lucas says.

“I do.” She looks up. “If we can’t go to the police, what can I do?”

Lucas shares a look with Seth. “We’re working on it. I know you have no reason to, but you’ll just have trust us, be a little patient.”

“How do I know you’re not going to hurt me?” Seraphina asks cautiously.

“Staying here don’t hurt,” Seth answers. “I mean, there’s no maid service or butlers to be ordered around, but I think you can stand it.”

Seraphina levels him with a heated glare. There’s the fire.

“You got something you want to say, princess?” Seth peers at her, a forkful of eggs in his hand.

“I had a simple question. If you won’t answer me, then I have to assume you’re not really who you say you are.” She places both hands on the table and pushes up.

“Sit back down and finish your breakfast.” Colt commands, pointing at her with his fork.

Her cheeks redden while she stares at all of us.

“You heard the phone call,” I say. “If we were working for her, do you think we’d let you listen to it? Would we tell you about it? That would be stupid, wouldn’t it? If she paid us to kill you, we wouldn’t be talking about it. We’d just do it.”

“Now you’ve gone and made her think we kill for a living.” Dylan shoots a glare at me, before turning to reassure Serafina. “You’re safe here. We’re working on figuring out what the next move is, and when we know, we’ll tell you.”

“So, I’m supposed to just trust that a group of strangers is protecting me from my stepmother?” The fire from her eyes seeps into her voice.

“I don’t like the tone you’re using.,” Lucas says authoritatively, moving to his feet.

Great. He’s gonna get all Daddy on her and she’s really gonna start fighting us.

“My tone?” she scoffs, indignantly.

“Seraphina.” I get up from my chair and stand in front of her, saving her from Lucas’ wrath. I put my hands on her shoulders, squeezing gently.

Her crystal blue eyes are full of anger and confusion when they meet mine. A tremor runs through her, and her bottom lip trembles.

“Seraphina, I’m sure you’re scared,” I offer when she remains quiet. “But we really are helping you.”

“But why? You don’t know me from any other girl in the world. Why take me in?” There’s a tremble in her voice. Her chest is rising and falling faster, too.

“I knew your father. A long time ago.” Lucas stands up. “Before he married Vivian, before he started his company.”

“Before he was a criminal, you mean.” There’s a bite to her words.

For once Lucas ignores it. “What I’m telling you is I’m not his enemy.”

“I know my stepmother doesn’t like me, but to order me killed?” She wipes a hand across her cheek, brushing back her hair. “I don’t understand.”

“It’s money.” Seth shrugs. “It’s always money with people like that. Grow up with silver spoon feeding you every day, then when you take a step in the wrong direction, you’re out.” My muscles tense. One day I’m gonna throw my fist into that grumpy ass’s mouth.

Lucas shoots him a look that would normally have a grown man wetting his pants. Seth grunts and looks away.

“So, if you don’t kill for a living, what do you do?” Seraphina changes the subject but continues to ignore her breakfast.

“We own a security company. Private security, in-home security systems, business security, anything you can think of, we can do it.” Dylan explains.

She points to the bag of equipment piled up by the front door. “So, you’ll be gone all day?”
