Me: That’s what a kidnapper would say.

Me: Besides, I’m not even sure that really was my scary boss who rescued my cat. I’ve never seen my boss wearing anything other than a suit and tie. The man who had my cat was wearing a t-shirt and shorts, which I’m not convinced my boss owns.

The tailored suits he wears at work have always hugged his toned body, but seeing him dressed so casually had done something unholy to my insides.

Tall, Dark & Handsome: Sophie…

A shiver runs down my spine as I imagine him saying my name. The exasperated growl I imagine he’d finish with.

Me: Yes?

Tall, Dark & Handsome: Why did you text me?

Me: Honestly?

Me: I don’t know.

Tall, Dark & Handsome: Let me know when you figure it out.

You know what’s worse than being woken up by your famous sister and her equally-famous husband video calling you at five in the morning on a Saturday?

Being woken up by the celebrity duo video chatting you from Bora Bora while sporting the hard-on from hell, and not being awake enough to realize they can see it.

“Yo, Teddy, put that weapon away!” Garrett laughs at me.

“Did we wake you up? Sorry!” Casey’s face leaning over Garrett’s shoulder is deeply tanned and fresh. “We just wanted to say hi. I guess I got the time difference wrong. We haven’t gone to bed yet.”

I push myself up out of bed, careful not to wake up the snoring Max next to me. “I don’t want to know why you’re still awake, isn’t it two in the morning for you? My alarm would have gone off in a few minutes anyways. But that’s what you get for waking me up.” I take the phone with me to the kitchen so I can make coffee. “How’s the tropical life?”

Casey and Garrett fill me in on their adventures—snorkeling and lounging in their private bungalow. “Why are you awake, anyways?” I ask before jealousy eats too far into my stomach lining.

“That’s my fault.” Garrett’s grin is easy

“Ahhh, yes, the vampire movie is up next, right? Trying to prepare for all those night shoots, huh?”

Casey blushes and Garrett grins.

“Never mind, I don’t want to know.”

“Probably for the best. So what, or should I say who, has you waking up in such a state?” Garrett pulls the phone from Casey. “Go away babe, Teddy and I need to have a big brother chat.”

Cringing, I sip my coffee. “I’m fine.”

“No you’re not, Teddy. I can tell. Besides, you’ve only emailed us once this week. So, who’s got you distracted?”

Should I tell him? Who else would I tell? My brother-in-law is the closest thing to a friend I have at this point. Growing up in Casey Sutton’s shadow with the ultimate stage mom didn’t make it easy for me to make friends. Especially when I turned out to be more kid-genius than child star. My mom was so busy managing Casey’s career, and sleeping with Casey’s agent, and stealing Casey’s money, that she didn’t have much time for me. When our mom and Casey’s former agent concocted a scandal about Garrett and Casey having some kind of under-age affair, my sister and I both cut ties with her.

“It’s my admin.”

“Mercedes? Isn’t she old enough to be your mother?”

I choke on my coffee. “No, God no. I meant the one who sits at the main reception desk. You probably don’t remember her.”

“The blonde? I remember her. She was super sweet and kept an eye on Ethan while I changed Clara’s diaper last time we were there. What about her?” His voice drops down to a whisper. “I mean, she’s very attractive, but why now? She’s been there for years hasn’t she?”
