Frankie freezes, and I brace myself for a repeat of last time. Someone is calling, and of course they’re more important than me. Slowly, I ease my fingers out of her, my dick practically weeping in frustration. Frankie doesn’t move for a long moment, then she straightens.

When she turns to face me, I step back so she can pass me and retrieve her phone from the couch where I left it. “Go ahead. I’ll make you a cup of abomination.”

She hesitates, indecision written all over her expressive face. The phone buzzes again and it seems to help her decide something. “I don’t want your horrible coffee, Julian.” She smiles, and my stupid heart bursts with hope at the affection I see written in her eyes. “But I am starving.”

“One more time for me, Rocky,” I growl in her ear.

Frankie is perched on my kitchen counter, legs wrapped around my hips as I drive into her. She’s already come twice, once from my fingers and then from my tongue when I first sat her on my counter. And that was after she’d dropped to her knees and freed me from my sweatpants, wrapping her sweet lips around my cock.

I can’t get enough of the noises she makes when my cock hits that sweet spot inside her. One hand braced against the cupboard behind her head, I pull her hips forward as I drive into her.

“Yes, yes. Right there.” She moans over and over as I keep the pace.

“I’m almost there.” My orgasm is building at the base of my spine, the backs of my legs tingling with the effort of holding it at bay. I keep driving into her warm pussy, giving myself to her with each stroke. “I’m so close. Tell me you’re close.”

Frankie grabs my face and pulls me in, kissing me hard. Her lips devour mine, pulling me closer and closer as the kiss deepens. Between her heels digging into my back, her hips pressing into mine, and this kiss, she’s consuming me, body and soul.

I slam into her once more and she gasps, clawing her hands down my spine as our orgasms rip through us. Pumping my hips against hers as she spirals down, her walls clench as I empty myself.

“Fuck, that was…” Frankie has to catch her breath. “That was…” She leans back on her hands as I pull out, removing the condom and tying it off. She waves a hand, too winded to speak after the way she’d been panting and moaning.

Grinning, I move to toss the condom in the trash under the sink when I think better of it. I’d hate to forget about it and have Liam come across it. “I’ll be right back.” I press a kiss to her lips before striding down the hall to my bathroom to toss it. Frankie cursing and the thump of something hitting a cabinet door drifts back through my open door. Chuckling to myself, I take a second to wash my hands and face before heading back out.

“I have to go.”

Not the words I was expecting to hear.

Frankie is zipping up her jeans, her thin tank top already on, sweater pinched against her side with her elbow. She looks up, an apology in her eyes. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize how late it was. I’m supposed to meet Lauren and Sophie to pick up our dresses for the party.”

She stops talking to pull her sweater on, giving me a split second to gather my thoughts. “Are you sure? Sophie was just here—”

Frankie squeaks. “Sophie was here? Why?”

“She stopped by with Emma and Liam so he could grab some textbooks for a project they’re working on.”

“Did they know I was here?” Her tone gets a little higher with each word, anxiety spilling out of her.

“Emma recognized your phone.” I point to the device in her hand. “Does it matter?”

Hurt and irritation color the post-orgasm happiness I’d been feeling. Why does this keep happening? Every time I think something is changing between us, that Frankie is ready to embrace an element of truth to our relationship, she gets a reminder from her real life, and I’m back to being an afterthought.

“I don’t know.” She pulls her hair to one side, dividing it into three sections before braiding it over her shoulder. “This all started so… weird. And then everything changed, and now I don’t know what we are. Or what to think. I can’t think straight when I’m with you.”

Normally, I would take that as a compliment, but judging by her hot and cold routine and the look on her face, I don’t think it is. “I told you, Frankie, I want this. Us. Isn’t that what you want too? I don’t understand why you seem so afraid for everyone to think this is real. It’s not a secret, it never has been. That was the whole point.”

“I don’t know, either.” She keeps glancing toward the door, like she’d rather be through it than stay here with me. Some delicate thing that had been growing inside me snaps when she does it again.

“If you’re not sure about this, then fine. I can do fake.” I snap the words at her. I’ll wall off my heart and go back to being the bodyguard keeping her safe and that’s it.

If she can’t decide whether she wants me or not, I’ll make the choice easy. She can have my body if she wants it, but the Frankie-sized space I’d been making in my heart is no longer hers for free.

“I…” Frankie doesn’t finish her thought, glancing from me to the door, sweater hem mashed between her fingers.

“If you need to go, Frankie, then go. I won’t force you to stay.”

“Julian, I’m sorry. It’s just that we made the appointment for this fitting weeks ago. I can’t miss it.”

“Rocky, you don’t need to apologize. I get it. It’s not like we planned this.”
