“How about amuch more attractive one?”

“What?”

“Be my wife.”His hand tightened on her arm. “I want to marry you.”

She simply stared athim in shock. “Are you high?”

“Yes.” Hesmiled grimly. “Ever since I met you, I knew you were the one Ihad been searching for. From the very moment I laid eyes on you, Iknew it here-” Using his free hand, he made a fist and thumpedit against his chest. “You are who I came back home for, and Ido not want to spend a day without you.”

“I cannot marryyou.”

“Because wejust met-”

“That and thefact that I signed a legal document.” She pushed at him again, but he would not budge.

“I cannotbelieve I am even listening to you, to this insanity. I am a simplegirl from a simple home. I work for your mother. You are her onlychild and the heir to a fortune. Do you honestly think ElizabethConnelly would agree to something like this?”

“I know it’sgoing to be difficult-”

“No!” Herhands fisted on his chest. “I am not listening to this anymore.Just go away.”

“Not until youtell me I will see you tonight,” He told her firmly.

“So that we canhave sex?”

His expressionsoftened. “So that I can be with you. I have keys to severalapartments-”

“You thinkI am that kind of girl?” She blazed at him.

“You are thegirl who is going to be my wife.” Clamping a hand at the backof her neck, he kissed her roughly before stepping back. “Ihave to go.”

She stood where shewas, her limbs trembling. He was mad; it was as simple as that. Theyjust met yesterday, and he was already proposing to her. It must bethe way he gets his kicks. Of course, she could not marry him and didnot want to anyway. Pacing the room’s length, she stoppedbefore the wall of books, most of them first edition.

Elizabeth hadinformed her that part of her job was to do research, and she hadavailed herself of the extensive collection, both here and in themassive library, that had her staring in amazement. Of course, shehad not been taken on a tour of the entire manor because why shouldshe when she was only required to use this section of the house?

But she had caughtglimpses of contemporary and traditional artworks on walls andseveral rooms with luxurious carpeting and an expensive Ming vase ona pedestal in an elegant egg-white sitting room. The ballroom wasmassive, and Elaine was unbent enough to tell her that parties werethrown there almost every week.

She did not belonghere. She was an employee; it was simple, and she knew her place.Getting involved with the boss’s son was a disaster waiting tohappen, and she was smart and intelligent. She needs the job. Itwould serve to get rid of some of the bills piling up.

There were thehospital bills and the credit card payments that had dragged down hercredit scores. The compensation package was far more than she hadever earned at any corporate office.

The generous salaryincluded medical benefits that included dental and optical. It was avery good deal, and she would be a colossal idiot if she blew itbecause she was dazzled by a very wealthy and extremely handsome man.One who came at her with pretty words like saying he was falling inlove with her and wanted to marry her.

She was just going tohave to avoid him from now on. How she would accomplish that wasbeyond her, but she had to do it.

He had proposed. Hehad never done that, shocking him to the core. He had proposed to awoman he had just met and was trying to come to terms with it. But hemeant it. He meant every word he had said to her.

“What we havehere is a brand targeted to a diversified marketing strategy.”The reed-thin head of distribution walked to the screen at the frontof the room. “Women are taking a long look at the brands theyare using.

The cashmerefoundation has been flooding the market. As the name indicates, it issoft and gentle on the skin and feels wonderful. I have used itmyself.”

“But?”

Melissa glanced overat the sound of Elizabeth’s voice and felt her belly trembling.

“It is gearedtowards women of a certain social bracket.”
