She closed hereyes briefly. “And?”

“She is nottaking it well.”

“Herlawyers-”

“You are notgoing to worry about that. Not now. The good news is that you aresafe, and I am here with you.”

“How could hedo this?” Elizabeth felt as if she was imploding. “Howcould he be so stupid? And that girl! She lied to me and broke thecontract she signed. One that specifically said that she could notget married for two years.”

“One thatyou had no right to impose on anyone.”

Turning around, sheglared at Allan, eyes shooting fire. “She had a choice. Signthe damn thing or look for another job.”

“And I amguessing that when she signed, she was not involved with anyone,”he pointed out.

“My son. Shemust have manipulated him-”

“I do hope youare not going to go with that approach. I don’t know Brennanvery well, but the little I know of him is that he is not a puppetwho can be twisted around.”

“She must havedone something.”

“Like what?”He asked in exasperation. “Cast a spell?”

“You are nothelping,”

“And youare making a big deal out of nothing. You wanted him to get married, and he did that. Now you are also getting a bonus, a grandchild.”

“She is not theright person for him.”

“And he wantedto choose his bride.” He rose from his position on the sofa andreached for his jacket. “My advice to you, Elizabeth, is don’talienate him or his bride. Don’t make him have to choosebetween his mother and his wife. We both know how that will turnout.” He stared at her for a minute before shaking his head. “Ihave to go.”

Wrapping the robearound her, she went to sit on the sofa, her mind working furiously. How dare he do this! From her calculations, it would appear that hehad hooked up with that- that girl since the day he returned home. Nowonder he was so conflicted. He had been keeping this secret; theyboth had, and it had been bothering him.

But not her! Oh no,Ms. Madison Hunt had carried on her duties as usual, never oncegiving the sign that she was holding a secret as huge as that. Thewoman had been as cool as a cucumber, even when Brennan had been inthe office several times, no doubt to check on her.

Where had they doneit? Vegas? In some tacky chapel? Her son, her only child, had beeninveigled to marry some ordinary woman, and she had not been part ofit. The hurt was managing to override the anger.

Brennan would neverhave come up with that idea. It must have been her. She pretended shewas so sincere, but what if that was why she had applied for theposition in the first place? To get her hands on the Connelly’sfortune. She would be in for a rude awakening if that were herintention!

“I have to gohome and shower and change. Kyle says he is going to look in everyfew minutes.”

“Have you heardfrom your Mom?”

“Not yet. Don’tworry about it.” He kissed her softly. “I am grimy andjetlagged, but aside from running home to shower and get a change ofclothing, I will be back.”

“I am fine. Andthe cops-”

“Will not bespeaking to you unless I am present.”

“Brennan-”

“No.” Hetold her firmly. “When I return, we will talk to them, and youstill need to rest. No one is in unless it’s the doctors, and Iwill make that clear to the front desk.

“You are beingunreasonable.”
