“I havecontacted our lawyers, and they have agreed to meet with us in thenext hour.” She was dressed in a severe black pantsuit; herhair ruthlessly brushed back from her face.
“I won’tbe able to make it. Madison is recuperating, by the way.”
“You marriedthis woman without my blessing-”
“Don’tyou mean your permission?” He asked her tightly as he followedher into the living room.
“If you werenot doing anything wrong, you would not have felt the need to marrythis woman and keep it a secret.” She rounded on him furiously.“Was that her idea? Did she seduce you so that she can get herhands on your money?”
He gave her anincredulous stare. “You think I am that gullible?”
“I think youare a man, and when a beautiful woman sets out to seduce andensnare-”
“Like youwere?” The minute the words were out of his mouth, he regrettedit. “Mother, I apologize-”
“If you cannotmake the meeting, I will ask the lawyers to reschedule it for a moreconvenient time. I am an assistant and still have much work to do.Now, if you will excuse me.”
She swept out of theroom, leaving him standing there and staring after her. With avicious curse, he strode out and bounded up the stairs. The lawyerscould go to hell; his only concern was his wife.

“My dear, whydidn’t you tell me about this?” The hurt on her aunt’sface was more than she could bear. “You felt the need to hidethat you were getting married.”
“I am sorry,auntie.” She gripped the woman’s hand. “It wascomplicated.”
“I am not afool, honey.”
“I am notsaying you are. I would never say that.”
“And the youngman is that woman’s son. The one you are working for.”
“Yes.”
“You just methim.”
“Yes, but weare in love with each other.”
“Then why thesecrecy?”
“I signed acontract that forbids me to marry for two years. A binding one.”
Ilene stared ather. “Why on earth would you do something like that?”
“I needed themoney, and the compensation package was very good. We had all thosebills-”
“And wewould have managed. You did this for me.”
“I did this forus.”
“And now youare in trouble. That woman is wealthy and will make an issue out ofthat broken agreement.”
“Auntie-”
“It’s apleasure to meet you finally.” They both turned at the sound ofthe deep voice.
“You are theman who married my niece in secrecy.”
