I was frozen inconstant terror the entire time I was on that plane, wondering if Iwould be too late. This is new for me. I am stupid when it comes toyou, irrational as hell. I don’t care what happens with thedamn lawyers; my only concern is you. Now, is that clear?”

Madison stared at himfor a few minutes, her breath lodged inside her throat as she sankweakly on the easy chair behind her.

“Yes,”She whispered. “I am so sorry, darling. It’s just that Iknow your mother is not speaking to you-”

“You don’tneed to worry about that.” Rushing forward, he dropped to hisknees in front of her. “It will sort itself out. I will figurethings out.” Taking her hand in his, he brought it up to hislips and kissed her knuckles.

“I adore you.”He smiled weakly. “There are some questions, some issues that Iam facing, and one day soon I will tell you, but I love you, and I amhere for you.”

Tears blurred hereyes as she stared at him. “She is going to make me out to be agold digger.”

“Let her try.”

“She is yourmother-”

“And you are mywife.” He told her fiercely. “We are a unit, a team, andthe bond between us will never be broken by anyone, not ever her.”

“Promise mesomething.”

“Anything.”

“Anythingwithin reason?” She asked teasingly.

“Anything,”He repeated.

“That you willtalk to her and try and work things out with her. She is your mother, and she loves you, that much I know.” Her hands gripped his.“We pissed her off by getting married without her knowing aboutit. I can just imagine how she feels. And people will be looking ather and wondering why she kept it a secret.”

“I will talk toher,” He promised quietly. “Now, are you well enough totake the tour?”

“Absolutely.”

“How aboutthis- I carry you up the stairs, and we go on?”

Her smile came justthen, and he felt the tight hold around his heart loosening. Thingshad been so hectic between them since last week. The detectives hadinterviewed her, and she had identified the suspects. His mother wasnot talking to him, and he had been putting off meeting with thelawyers, insisting he had to be there for his wife.

Then, there was thedecorating of the apartment. The good thing was that he did not haveto go through the company because the place was his. And he had nottouched one cent of any of the corporate accounts but was using histrust fund. He was not going to give the lawyers any leeway.

“You aredetermined to take care of me, aren’t you? No matter what Isay.”

“You guessedit. Ready?”

Nodding, she shiftedforward so he could lift her into his arms.

He gave her the tourand looked for signs that she approved. “We could use theadjoining bedroom for a nursery.”

“Think it’sbig enough?” She asked in amusement as she wandered around thelarge, airy bedroom with the skylight roof. There was a largefireplace at her aunt's, quickly three times the size of her bedroom. The decor was lovely, teal blue and hints of green.

The furnishings werenew, a solid mahogany. The bed had been replaced by one so vast thatshe knew she would be lost.

“So?”

“I love it.”She turned towards the walk-through closet with the revolvingshelves. There was a vanity table and chair complete with a mirrorand the size of her bedroom at her aunt’s place. “Thereare already clothes here.”

“I orderedthings from Romano’s. More are on its way. I have hired a maid, and she will be here in the morning.”

“I am guessingshe is already vetted.”

“I have knownher since I was a child.”
