“Your wife andson are doing great.”

“So I was told.Need a drink?”

“No, thankyou.” She watched as he walked over to the cabinet to pourhimself a drink.

“She needsyou.”

“She should beresting. She has been through a hell of a lot.”

“She needs you,darling.”

“I am not ableto speak to her right now.”

“You areupset.”

“You think?”Picking up the glass, he walked to the easy chair beside thefireplace. Standing next to it, he looked into his drinkcontemplatively. “She put herself in danger.”

“That’snot fair.”

“I told her notto go.”

“She iscommitted to the cause-”

“One thatalmost cost her life!”

She jumped when hehurled the glass of scotch against the wall.

“I specificallyasked or to just take it easy for the duration. She had what? Twoweeks before her due date, all she had to do was to take it easy. Youencouraged her to continue working, had her so damned wrapped up inthis cause that she would not listen to me. The result? She wasalmost killed. I almost lost my entire family.”

“Then blameme.”

“I do.”He told her coldly.

“Blame me, anddo not punish her. She needs you, darling. When I was leaving, shewas trying your phone again. You are right when you say she needs herrest, but she cannot settle because her husband, the man she lovesand her baby's father, is not with her.”

“I need aminute.”

“Not at theexpense of your wife and son.”

“I will bethere in the morning. And I am in constant contact with the doctors.Kyle promised to look over her.”

“Kyle is afriend. You are her husband. She needs you.”

“I need to getmy head on straight.”

“And you aredoing that by smoking and drinking. I can smell the tobacco on you, darling. This is not you.”

“How would youknow that?” He asked her rudely. “I need to be alone.”

“When I hadyou, I went through a particularly rough delivery. “

“I don’twant to hear-”

“You are goingto stand there and listen to me. I am your damn mother, and I amgoing to have my say.”

Staring at her for afew seconds, he nodded jerkily. “He stayed at the hospital longenough to see that you were healthy and not in any danger. I was inlabor for fourteen hours, weak and out of it.

He left to go to hiscurrent mistress, and even though we did not have a goodrelationship, I needed him, and he was not there. I went intopostpartum depression right after and for months could barelyfunction.”
