“Do you? I knowwhy you have been reading books about fatherhood and genetics.”

“I justwant to know how to be a good dad. I would think that is somethingyou want as well.”

“You are awonderful husband, and I could not have wished for a better man. Youshowed me who you were the first time I met you. We have been torestaurants and various outings, and you made me feel as if I am theonly woman in the world where you are concerned.”

“That’sbecause you are,” He admitted.

“There yougo.”

“Being a goodhusband does not necessarily mean being a good father.”

“Youhave been with me throughout the pregnancy and the delivery.”

“I did leave tocome back to the apartment.”

“Did you goto another woman?”

“Don’t beridiculous.”

“Precisely.”She smiled at him. “Elizabeth also told me about her time inthe hospital and how your dad left her to go to his current mistress. You left because you were overwhelmed with what happened to me andbecause you were pissed that I disobeyed you.

Then you came back. You took time off from work to be with me even though the company iscurrently going through an extensive campaign. You are already aterrific dad, and I don’t want you to think otherwise.”

Placing his hand overhers, he closed his eyes briefly. “It’s difficult for meto talk about him, about the past.”

“I know. But I would like to think that I am different. I am the woman you arein love with.”

“You are, andsometimes I wonder how I got so lucky.”

“I could saythe same about myself. You are nothing like them, darling, and Ishould know. You are wonderful. Yes, sometimes your highhandednessgets on my nerves, but I know it’s because you love and want toprotect me from everything.”

“I get on yournerves.”

“You know youdo. And stop changing the subject,” She chided. “We havebeen through a hell of a lot-”

“I thought weweren’t swearing-”

“Brennan-”

“Shutting upnow,” He promised with a grin.

“Anyway,”She rolled her eyes at him. “As I was saying, you are the bestman I know, and I am so happy I met you. I would like to think thatGod had a say when he allowed me to get that job with my mother. Wewere meant to be. You came back from Europe at the exact time I wasworking for her. And we clicked.”

“I think it wasmore than that,” He murmured.

“Much more.”She agreed. “Now, can we enjoy the solitude and quiet beforeour son wakes up for his meal?”

“We can.”Drawing her into his arms, he took several breaths. “Thankyou.”

“And thriving.Your husband is playing his part.”

“AndElizabeth is doting. She loves the idea that we are staying here onthe weekends. It gives her a chance to bond with her grandchild.”
