"So do I."Madison squeezed her hand.

"Is Kyle goingto be all right?"

"I hope so."

"I thought thetwo of you would have ended up together."

"We are morelike siblings. He is my best friend."

"I would likeyou to promise me something."

"Anything."

"You will notallow what happened with that dreadful young man to turn you offromance. One day, you will find the man of your dreams, one who isworthy of you. One who will respect you and love you for who youare."

"I am notlooking-"

"And that iswhen it finds you." She patted her niece's hand. "When youleast expect it."

"That is a longway from happening. I am going to concentrate on this wonderfulopportunity." Putting the cup down, she turned to her aunt. "Ialready explained that this job will be very demanding."

"Of course youdid, honey."

"I don't wantyou to worry when I arrive home late."

"Just make sureyou call and let me know you are okay."

"I will."Leaning over, she kissed the woman's weathered cheek. "Thanksfor the snack."

"I will leavethe tray in here for you to finish. And get some sleep - you have abig day tomorrow."

Little did she knowthat Madison would revisit the conversation with her aunt in lessthan two weeks. Blissfully unaware of how much her life would change, she ate the rest of the biscuit, brushed her teeth, and returned tobed, determined not to torture herself about her first day at work.

But it took a longtime for her to fall asleep, and she lay there staring up at theceiling and wondering if she would cut.

Chapter 3

The house, if itcould be called that, was overwhelming with its towering spires, pinkbrick, and glass that seemed to rise toward the sky. A private roadled to the manor, and as soon as she turned off, the electronic gateopened to admit her.

A butler, dressedentirely in black, hurried out to direct her to where she should parkbefore proceeding towards the towering double doors a uniformed maidopened.

"Ms. Elizabethis in the study. She is expecting you." The woman gave her afaint smile and led the way through a wide passageway with a higharched ceiling and pricey artwork on the walls.

The interview hadtaken place at the corporate office, which had taken her breath awaywith its luxury, but this was on an entirely different level, leavingher to wonder if the cream wool dress and sky-high black heels wereeven enough.

They stopped at adouble door. After a discreet knock, the maid pushed them open andstepped back. "Ms. Hunt."

"Ah, right ontime." Elizabeth Connelly was wearing unrelieved black, thepantsuit flattering her creamy complexion. Her sable hair was sweptback into an elegant chignon at the nape of her neck, and she worediamonds at her lobes.

"I trust thatyou had a good weekend?"

"I did."Madison had no idea what she was supposed to do next. The 'study' wasa large room decorated in muted colors. The desk was massive, and asmaller desk was near the window. Several comfortable-looking sofaswere strewn around the room, and a sleep chair was placed in front ofthe fireplace.

"Please comein," Elizabeth gestured to the smaller desk. "You areequipped with a laptop and a phone, which should always be on ifneeded. The filing cabinet is filled with the various organizations Ioversee.

I am involved withmany charities that have been neglected due to my involvement withthe company. Now that my son- Ah, right on time. Darling, I thoughtyou had already left."
