“It’s inthe middle of the week, and I am on the early shift the next day.”he had pointed out.

“We could leaveearly. Oh please, I want to go.”

He had capitulatedthen, and now he regretted it. She had begged to be introduced toJackson and Jason and had spent twenty minutes gushing over them.

He could not believethis was the same woman he had thought of as calm and collected whenhe first met her. On their first date, she insisted they go to abistro. “Not your usual fancy restaurant. I know you want tolead as normal a life as possible, and I want to help.”

He had admired hercandor and the fact that she was not dazzled by his name and socialstanding. Now he realized it had all been for show, something totrick him into thinking she was not like the rest. He was about toend the relationship anyway, making it even easier.

“I will be overthere.” He pointed in the general direction of the buffet.Without waiting for her approval, he wound through the crowd towardthe table where Jackson and Jason were surrounded by admiringpatrons.

“I don’tknow how you stand it.” He murmured as the brothers managed tomove them along.

“Stand what?”Plucking a glass of champagne off the tray, Jackson eyed himcuriously.

“The constantfawning.”

“They happen tobe paying lots of money for my paintings; the least I can do is putup with the adulation,” he said with a grin.

“You loveit.”

“I tolerateit.” Jackson corrected him, eyeing his friend curiously. “You,conversely, doc, seem to be at sea.” His gaze lifted to thewoman who was now talking to Liam. “Bored already?”

“What the hellis wrong with me?”

“It seems youare searching for something meaningful.”

Cooper laughedsoftly. “Trying your hand at psychology?”

“You are theone with the medical degree. I am just making a point.”

“And that wouldbe?”

“You are notsatisfied with your life or the woman in it. That simply means it istime for a change.”

“I am sick ofthe entire scene, and suffice it to say that I thought she wasdifferent.”

Jackson chuckledsoftly. “As opposed to?”

“The others Ihave been out with.” Shrugging that aside, he picked up a plateand loaded it with shrimp and canapes. “She got me to purchasethe ‘Illusion.’”

“Ah,”Jackson grinned at him. “Excellent choice.”

“It also costsmore than my damn salary for the year.”

“But you canmore than afford it, my friend.”

“That’sentirely my point. I am a doctor, and she knows that.”

“She also knowsyou are not your everyday run-of-the-mill doctor. You happen to beworth a damn fortune.”
