“It could be.What do you say?”

“I have toleave early.”

“You could takeanother day. As your physician, I insist on two days or possiblythree.” He was nibbling on her neck.

“You are not myphysician, and I am certain you have to go in tomorrow.”

“I could saythat I must stay with my special patient.”

“You arehilarious. But no, I have to go in, and so do you. Lives to changeand all that.”

“But you arestaying the night.”

“I have nothingto wear.” She reminded him. “And my car is still at theclinic.”

“I will takeyou home, and you get changed, and then I drop you off.”

Turning her head, sherolled her eyes at him. “You have it all planned out, don’tyou?”

“Hmm.”His hands cupped her face. “There is a function on Saturday atthe Royal Court Hotel.”

“No. You areforcing my hand, and I am not ready for all the publicity our beingtogether will generate. I have not told my mother-” She closedher eyes briefly.

“What is it?”

“She is goingto be as pleased as punch. This was what she wanted all along, mehooking up with a rich guy, and you hit all the check marks.”

“Happy to be ofservice,” he told her with a grin.

“And in themeantime, your mother and sister will look down their noses at me. Irun a free clinic in the most depressed area downtown.”

“What you do iscommendable. I admire you for making a difference.”

“Will theythink so?”

“Perhaps not.But that is of no significance to me.” He told her firmly. “Ilove you, Brooke, and I want you to believe that.”

“I don’tknow if I can-” She shook her head at the frustrated look onhis handsome face.

“These feelings are running the gamutinside me.

These are emotionsthat I have never felt before, and I am scared. You are the firstperson aside from my family I have ever opened up to. This is new forme, Cooper. I am not sure how to deal with any of it. I need time.”

“To do whatexactly?”

“I thought Iwas the stubborn one.” She muttered. “Time to adjust, toget used to you, to these confusing feelings inside me. As soon asit’s out there, we will be bombarded, not only by the press butby our families as well. Not to mention the women of your past-”

“You do notneed to worry about that.”

“I am notworried. I just need some time.”

“You have aweek,” he told her implacably.

“What? No.”Pushing his hands away from her face, she started to rise, but hekept her in place. “A week is not enough time for me to -”

“Figure out howyou feel about me. You already know that. I want us to go out ondates, Brooke and I am only prepared to give you seven days to getused to the fact that I am in your life.”

“You cannotexpect to barge into my life and start thinking you are running theshow.” Her eyes flashed as she pushed at his chest. “I ammy person, and I am saying that one week is not enough time.”
