Her eyes narrowed asshe stared from the box to his handsome face. “What is that?”

“You are one ofthe smartest women I know. The shape of the box should tell youwhat’s inside.” He held it out in the palm of his handand watched in exasperation as she stared at the box. “It’snot going to bite, Brooke.”

“Why here?”

“Really?”

“Someone mightbe looking at us.”

“As we are notdoing anything illegal, I don’t much care.”

“It’s toosoon.”

“For what?”His patience was getting low at this point. “I am in love withyou and was thinking we could get married in June.”

“Which is nextmonth.”

“Gee, I did notknow that.” Deciding his hands, he flipped the clasp open toreveal a stunning square-cut diamond engagement ring. Knowing shewould not initiate the movement, he tugged her left hand, opened herfingers, and slid the ring on. It was a perfect fit. Brooke stared atit, dazzled by the exquisite beauty of the stone.

“I have notsaid yes, and come to think of it, you never asked.”

“Let’sremedy that, shall we?” Still holding her hand, he got on oneknee when she tried to jerk him up. Resisting the effort, he went onone knee, eyes bright with emotions.

“I adore you.” Hetold her humbly. “It is that simple. I want to spend the restof my life with you, have children, and be there for you every day.”

To her horror, shefelt the tears clogging her throat, her eyes swimming with it. “Getup, you idiot.” She ordered huskily, throat burning.

“Not until yousay yes.”

“Oh damn you.Yes.” She tugged him up and wrapped her arms around him, herface buried in his chest as the tears flowed.

Caitlin jumpedslightly as her mother came to stand beside her at the living roomwindow overlooking the tennis court.

“She is perfectfor him.”

“She is toooutspoken.” Caitlin had been drawn to the window and watchedthe couple for ten minutes.

“And that’sa perfect thing.” Sela stared at her daughter thoughtfully. “Heis completely in love with her.”

“Making it easyfor her to wrap him around her little finger.”

Sela started to saysomething but decided against it. “He will always be yourbrother.”

“I know that.”She shrugged her thin shoulders as she stared at the couple. She hadseen the production with the ring and the woman’s seemingreluctance to accept it. “She might end up hurting him.”

“She loves him.She might not be as demonstrative as Copper, but that makes themperfect for each other. And I happen to like her forthrightness.”

“I suppose youthink I am just jealous.”

“Are you?”

Caitlin turned toface her mother. Copper had gotten the beautiful genes from her, while she had inherited everything except the amber eyes from herdad. She told herself that she never resented her very handsomebrother and that his decision not to play an active part in thecompany was no big deal.

But she was awarethat their mother adored him. She might fuss that he was not playinghis part, but she did not mean it, and whenever he came around,Caitlin could see how her face lit up.

Now, he was in love, and it was clear from the look on his face that this woman was hisworld, which would end up pushing her out of his life.
