“If it makes you feel any better, his father’s not happy with him over this,” E.A. adds. “He knows his son is a misogynistic asshole, and he’s going to stop him from getting back into your college.”

I glance at E.A. “He told you that?”

He nods. “He meant it.”

“That actually does make me feel a little better,” Beth admits as I drive past the house.

“Good. I’m glad,” E.A. murmurs.

I smile at him.

Definitely not a sociopath.

“So, how far away is this place we’re headed out to?” I ask, looking for him to direct me.

“Straight ahead for a few miles, then turn left when you see signs for the mall. There are a few fast food places before we reach the mall.”

“Ooh,” Beth murmurs. “Maybe we can go to all of them.”

I look at E.A. and he shrugs.

“We’ve got a long drive back either way,” he reminds me.

“Well then we might as well take a nice long break at a few fast food places.”

Chapter Sixty-Five

Leanne

Turns out E.A.’s choice of fast-food restaurant is actually a smoothie place. I can see why when he handpicks the veggies that go into his drink. Everything’s fresh, and he requests it all be washed again in front of him before it goes into the blender. Luckily no one else is in line so the guy serving us is happy to oblige. Beth and I get basic fruit smoothies while we wait to get something more substantial from a place that’s a lot less healthy.

The burger joint definitely checks the less healthy box.

Beth gets a double cheeseburger that looks way too big to finish, with a side of fries and a large soda. She eats like she’s been on a diet for months and this is the first satisfying bite she’s had in ages. My own, smaller hamburger pales a little in comparison, but I feel better when it’s done.

E.A. looks a little awkward sitting beside me with a bottle of water he’s really only moving around in his hands. He hasn’t been comfortable since we stepped into this place. I put my hand around his arm without thinking twice, anchoring myself to him as if it’s something I need. I think it’s something he needs, but I hold my breath while I wait for his reaction.

He tenses up a bit more, and I’m ready to let go before he relaxes and gives me a more convincing smile than the one he tried to pull when we first walked in here. It’s kind of loud, and bright, and the food smells are strong. I don’t think he’s used to this kind of atmosphere.

“This is amazing,” Beth gushes, as she swipes a fry across the front of her burger, covering it in the same ketchup that’s been dripping onto her napkin between bites. “Best burger and fries I’ve ever had!”

“We can grab another to go if you want, once you’re done with that,” I offer, simultaneously reminding E.A. that we’ll be leaving soon, and widening Beth’s smile.

“Sounds good to me,” she says, as she goes back to eating.

I glance at my boss and my future mate.

He’s got his eyes on his untouched bottle of water, but I can tell his thoughts are far away.

I wish I knew what he was thinking. He’s so different from anyone I’ve ever met.

It’s not usually too hard to figure people out, but E.A. is more complicated than most.

“Hey,” I murmur softly.

He blinks and turns his head, giving me his full attention.

The dark eyes that made him seem scary when we first met are tinged with sadness.
