No one bothered to visit, and phone-calls dried up pretty quickly.

I pushed my old friends away and made new ones who only encouraged my bad habits.

Now? I’m lucky if I get the occasional text or email from one of the girls I used to hang around with at the weekends. Usually, if I do hear from them, it’s a plea for bail money, or a desperate middle of the night call to come pick them up from someplace shady.

Guilt makes me say yes every time, because I wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about it if I said no and something bad happened to one of them. It doesn’t matter if they wouldn’t do the same thing in return. I was one of them once. I only got out of that vicious cycle because of Secret.

If I can help them until they find that one thing that makes them want to do better, I will.

I check my phone and find out I have an email about the corporate clerical job I applied for.

They’ve given me an interview slot for tomorrow. All I need to do is click yes to accept it.

My fingers shake a little bit as I do it.

I let out a soft sigh and I’m about to put the phone back into my bag when it rings. I almost drop it, the jolt of surprise making my grip slacken before I manage to grab it before it slides out of my hand.

I let out a curse under my breath, and then I remind myself I just applied for a few jobs online.

I compose myself to answer the call. “Hello?”

“Is that Leanne Leto?” A husky voice asks.

“It is. Who’s calling?”

“This is Echo from Shultz and Spencer Investigations. You applied for the assistant position, and Mr. Shultz would like to invite you in for an interview.”

I don’t know if it’s partly this guy’s sexy bedroom voice, or the fact that I’ve always secretly dreamed of becoming a detective, but my heart is racing as I realize I’ve got a shot at this.

“That would be great.”

“Could you do tomorrow afternoon?”

“Yes,” I tell him, wondering what he looks like.

He can’t look as good as he sounds. I can’t even imagine what that would look like.

“One p.m.?”

“Perfect.”

“We’ll see you then, Miss Leto.”

He hangs up and I put the appointment into my phone. It’s a few hours after the interview I just accepted for the corporate job, and they’re both central locations.

I guess I know what I’ll be doing all day tomorrow.

Chapter Nine

Leanne

Secret insists on sending Ryan to come and walk me over to their apartment when I jump at the chance to have to have dinner with them again. Anything’s better than being in my apartment, and spending time getting to know the daughter I didn’t get to raise as mine is what I’m here for.

Maybe if I get used to being around her Alphas, it’ll help me be less nervous around Alphas in general. I felt a little more comfortable in their company last night.

Why wouldn’t I feel comfortable around them, really?

They’re taking care of my daughter. I trust them.
