“Everything’s been tossed,” I tell her motioning to what’s in front of us.

“Okay, I’ve decided I don’t like you,” Beth tells me, looking back at Leanne. “You didn’t tell me he was so judgy.”

Leanne moves in next to me, slipping her hand into mine and leaning in as Beth starts picking through the scattered items.

“I think this is just how the room always looks,” she tells me quietly.

That’s hard to believe, but the haphazard way Beth tosses a bunch of her things into a duffle bag makes me realize it’s the truth. This is what her room always looks like.

Jesus. How does she ever find anything?

“He hasn’t been out here.”

That’s encouraging. Hopefully, he’s already home and being talked into turning himself in.

“Let’s get to Secret’s place,” Beth says, as she slings the duffle over her shoulder.

“Let’s go,” I tell her, not letting go of Leanne’s hand as I lead the way out of the room and then out of the building. Marcus didn’t come out here, and we’re not far from Secret’s apartment.

This case might still be open, but that’s for the cops to deal with.

As soon as Beth is safe with Secret, I have one single priority to think about and from now on that tops the list over everything. Protecting my mate from harm trumps everything.

I’ve never had to worry about this with Echo, because he’s content to stay in the office and be looked after by whichever one of us is there. Leanne is different. Omegas are used to being treated as rare and special. They know threats to their safety are real. They want to be protected.

Betas aren’t used to any of that.

Leanne has lived her life like every other Beta in the world.

She’s not going to be easy to take care of, but I’ll find a way.

Chapter Sixty-Eight

Leanne

Secret hugs Beth the second they see each other. It’s kind of sweet. They really seem close.

I don’t know what that’s like. My friends were always too hard to get a handle on.

They could flip from nice to nasty in a hot second.

That’s why I didn’t make the effort to stay in touch with anyone when I left high school and started working. Colleagues were a little less bitchy, but most of them were a lot older and not really interested in making friends with the much younger new girl. My party friends from the city were my only circle, and they were more interested in finding a good time than getting to know each other.

“I’m so glad you’re okay,” Secret says as they break apart.

“Well, there’s okay, and then there’s lightly brainwashed,” Beth starts, clearly ready to tell Secret everything.

“We’ll leave you guys to it,” I tell them, ready to collapse into E.A.’s comfy bed.

“Wait!” Secret says, stepping out and hugging me.

I let go of E.A.’s hand to hug her back.

“Thank you so much,” she gushes. “You’re the best …”

She steps back, shaking her head. “You’re just the best.”

She looks a little flushed, like she almost slipped and called me her sister.
