“That’s handy, I guess,” he says. “Anything else?”

I’m about to say no, when I realize there is something. It’s big, it’s not included in the official file, and I feel a little sick just thinking about it. I’ve spent a long time thinking if I just never say it out loud, then it can’t be true, but that’s a convenient lie.

I know the truth. I’ve known for a while.

“There’s another reason I’ve sitting on this,” I admit.

“Oh?” Seth asks. “What would that be?”

“It’s not in the file. I didn’t discover it until more recently.”

If you can call six years ago recent. I suspected sooner, of course. But bringing myself to get my father’s finances and check through them … I didn’t want to look, because I already knew.

“The day my mother went missing, my father put five hundred thousand dollars into his savings account. He got angry when I told him Mom didn’t run away, when I told him I’d seen evidence that Harlan took her. He stabbed me with a screwdriver. Called me a liar.”

“Holy shit,” Seth murmurs. “You think he sold her to West?”

“If he did, West paid cash. I’m sorry it’s not more solid, but it’s all I’ve got.”

“It’s practically impossible to get solid info on these creeps,” Seth says. “But we’re working on it.”

“You’re doing good.”

“We try,” he says, giving me a wry smile. “You want an update if this comes to anything?”

“Sure. You can call Leanne.”

“You don’t want me to call you personally?”

“I don’t know my number, and I don’t have my cell phone on me. Long story.”

“Right. Well, have a good one. I’ve got mates to get back to.”

He gets up and leaves, envelope in hand.

I wait a couple seconds before I get up and leave.

Stepping out into the sunshine and fresh air, it feels like a giant weight was just lifted off my shoulders.

I did what needed to be done. Now it’s up to someone else to find a way to get justice for Harlan West’s victims.

I have an actual life to live and it’s time I remembered that.

Chapter Eighty-Nine

Leanne

Toshi might not have an Alpha’s knot, but his stamina is something else. We spend so long making out and claiming each other that I have no idea what time it might be in this windowless room, and I’m definitely starting to get hungry which either means it’s close to a mealtime, or we missed one.

“This bed is mine now,” Toshi tells me, giving me a smile. “I’ve claimed it while I was claiming you.”

“I don’t think that’s how claiming stuff works,” I tell him. “But you’re welcome to try telling E.A. his bed belongs to you now.”

He laughs. “I don’t think he’d take it so well, do you?”

“I think he’d laugh, and let you sleep beside him.”

“Then, you’d have to sleep in beside Echo and Spencer, because this is definitely a maximum two person bed.”
