I blink at him, trying to think about something, anything, but what just happened.

“Missing what?” I ask.

He frowns at me, and glances at E.A.

“The start of the Sunday night gameshows,” he says. “Sorry, I just kind of thought you two might be killing each other in here, but I guess I was wrong.”

He raises his eyebrows when E.A. turns, making his new mark visible.

“Oh …” Echo murmurs, before his eyes widen. “Wait. Does this mean you’re our lead Alpha?”

He stares at me as I nod. I shrug because I don’t want it to be a big deal, even if it is.

“Holy …” Echo shakes his head. “This makes us Pack Spencer.”

“We’re no longer a double-barrel household,” E.A. confirms, sounding vaguely amused.

“Come on,” I tell Echo. “Tell me about the gameshows we’re about to numb our brains watching.”

My intention is to get out of the way so E.A. can make whatever bland food he was going to make before I had to speak to him. And I can remind myself that he’s not one of my mates until we get a chance to talk about what we both felt back there.

“Seriously,” Echo whispers as we leave the kitchen. “What did I just miss?”

“Maybe nothing,” I mutter, giving him a warning glance.

He lets it go, but I can tell he’s just going to ask again later.

I can only hope I have an answer figured out by then.

Chapter Ninety-Three

E.A.

Food is the last thing on my mind while I prepare my dinner. I go through the motions, my thoughts straying to the unexpected burst of heat that just formed between Spencer and I. Fifteen years as friends and partners at work, and that first flush of attraction caught us both by surprise.

I’m honestly not sure if it was a physical reaction to the mark he gave me, or something more.

He seemed ready to ask if I’d felt it, when Echo interrupted us to make sure we weren’t getting into an actual fight alone together in the kitchen.

If he’d given us a few more minutes something physical might have been happening, just not in the way Echo was expecting.

I feel good about my decision to ask Spencer to lead the pack.

It felt right. Everything’s starting to feel like it’s all falling into place perfectly.

For the first time in a long time, I’m actually content.

I cook my plain veggies and potatoes and put them onto a plate.

It probably looks like a boring meal to my mates, but it feels good to eat food that isn’t overly processed or full of ingredients that might be harmful.

Bringing the plate through to the living room, I can’t help but smile.

Toshi has his arm around Leanne at one edge of the L-shaped sofa. Spencer’s beside him, leaning forward, clearly eating. Echo’s facing Spencer and eating something with his fingers from the plate that’s balanced between his crossed legs. There’s space for me beside Echo, so that’s where I sit down. I feel everyone’s eyes on me, and I know Leanne’s the only one who isn’t completely shocked.

My Omega sits up straighter. “You’re joining us tonight.”

“I thought I’d try it out,” I joke, trying not to make too much of it.
