“She’s young and full of the overconfidence that comes with being an Omega who’s already met her true mates,” I tell her. “Kids always think they know better than their parents, and they’re only right about one percent of the time. This isn’t that one percent. Trust me.”

“You don’t have kids,” she starts.

“No, but I have parents, and I know how much of a pain in their asses I was when I was younger. You have no idea how happy they were when I finally moved out of their house. They actually had a party. Seriously. They had a Sam is leaving party.”

She laughs, and then gives me a questioning glance. “Sam? So, that’s your given name.”

“I threw it back at them when I was leaving. I told them I was going by Spencer on its own, like Madonna, or Cher.”

“What’s wrong with Sam?”

“That was their favorite catchphrase when I was around.”

She laughs. “Seriously. It’s a nice name.”

“It’s a nice name for a girl. You know how I know that? There were three Samanthas in my class at high school, and they all went by Sam. So, we were collectively known as The Sams. It was mortifying, and it gets worse. Some asshat had seen Heathers too many times and decided to nickname me Veronica. It stuck, like glue. I didn’t stop being Veronica until I graduated high school.”

She bites her lip, and I know it’s because she wants to laugh again.

It feels good that I’ve made her feel a little better.

“So, now you know,” I tell her. “Are you less attracted to me now?”

She shakes her head. “More.”

“More?” I raise an eyebrow at her.

“You shared something I could use to mock you, and you did it to cheer me up. That makes you more attractive as a mate and a lover.”

“There are other ways I’m attractive. Maybe I should introduce you to some of them before that story is the only thing you ever think about when you think about me.”

“Don’t worry,” she says. “I’ll take that story to my grave.”

I pass her back her phone. “Are you ready for a loud car chase movie with a bunch of explosions?”

She nods slowly. “I need to use the bathroom, but I’ll be there in a minute.”

I hit the bathroom light switch for her and then I head back to the living room.

Toshi looks up with guilty eyes. There are already a half dozen empty candy bar wrappers next to the tin. “I didn’t eat all of those.”

“Sure,” I tell him. “I believe you.”

Chapter Ninety-Six

Toshi

Spencer comes back after I’ve munched my way through the last of the caramel centred chocolate covered candies and I feel like I’ve been caught red-handed. I lie, because sometimes he tells me that’s cute, and I figure cute means I can get away with it.

He smiles this time, and walks over, stopping to examine the wrappers.

“Huh,” he murmurs. “Were those the last of the …”

“I’m cute,” I blurt out. “So, I’m allowed to eat the last one.”

“Seems like you ate the last seven.”

“Oops?” I shrug, pulling a helpless face.
