Squinting, Harlan stares at me. “Harlan had a good mommy, and a very, very bad daddy. See, Harlan’s mommy was a beautiful, rich Omega and any Alpha would have done anything to have her. But Harlan’s daddy screwed his mommy big fucking time. He left her pregnant and alone because he found another woman that he wanted. Are you starting to get the picture, yet, son of the world’s biggest whore?”

“You’re telling me the man my mother was engaged to before she met my father was your dad.”

“Very good. You’re brighter than you look. Now Harlan’s mommy was very angry with his daddy. So angry that she had to kill him for his betrayal. The whore saw the whole thing, but she promised to never say a word. She promised.”

Holy fucking hell. This psychopath’s mother killed my mom’s fiancé.

Wait. That doesn’t make sense.

“That isn’t possible, Harlan.”

“Oh, isn’t it, Edgar?” He smirks at me. “Why not?”

“We’re the same age.”

“Well, I’m six months older.”

“You know what I mean.”

“Yet, you don’t know what I mean,” he says. “Your father isn’t who you think he is.”

I blink at him. “No. That’s not …”

“It’s not possible?” he asks. “Think again, Edgar. Your parents never married. Why do you think that was, exactly?”

I close my eyes. He’s making too much sense, and I don’t like where this is headed.

“Your mother was pregnant when they met. Aldhard Shultz, being a low value Alpha, unlike my father, was so desperate to be with an Omega that he agreed to stay with Edeline Keyes and raise her child as his own even if she would never make it official with marriage. He knew he’d never get an Omega any other way, and that was all he cared about. Is that enough yet? Or do you want more?”

I open my eyes and stare back at him. “You made that offer to my father because my mother was ready to tell the police about what yours did.”

He steps back from the bars of his cell and claps his hands.

“Well done, Edgar. There’s hope for you after all.”

There was no way for me to know any of that. I never knew the name of my mother’s fiancé, and I don’t know anyone who would have been able to give me that information.

I’ll find a way to confirm it now, but I don’t think he’s lying.

He’s getting too much enjoyment out of this to be lying.

“You should get some rest, Harlan,” I tell him. “You’ll be going through some serious shit pretty soon.”

“You can’t leave me here, Edgar.”

“I can. Don’t worry, you’ll be out soon, but you won’t be free.”

He frowns at me. “You’re not going to kill me. So, what? You’re calling the cops?”

“Something like that,” I tell him, taking the tape recorder out of my pocket. “I wasn’t expecting to find out your mother was a killer, but I’m sure the press will be just as interested in that little story as they were to find out you’ve been human trafficking for twenty years.”

“You have no …”

“No what?” I ask. “No proof? I have fifteen jars of evidence that link up clients and victims. You also threatened one of my mates this afternoon, and we have that on video. Your life is over, Harlan. Say goodbye to your wife, your kids, your businesses. They’re all gone.”

“You’ll regret this!” he screams, as I take Leanne’s hand in mine.

I nod at Victor. “We’ll call when we want you to drop him off outside the police station.”
