I wait a second before I push the door the rest of the way open.

He’s sitting on the edge of the bed, putting on those boots with the chunky metal soles that make him a few inches taller. The tight-wrapped shirt shows how toned he is underneath, and the style is like a strait jacket, if those things were ever a neat fit. The sleeves are overlong and thin straps dangle from them. The back laces up and there are plenty of ways he could be restrained wearing it.

I look away before I’m too tempted to pin him to the bed until he goes into another heat.

It’s getting closer to that time of the month when his slick comes in harder, and his demands to be sated are the most important thing we need to think about.

I shake my head. “Stay in the reception when I go to talk to him.”

Echo gives me a hurt look as he gets to his feet. “You want to talk to him alone? About a woman …”

He hisses in a breath. “Is she your ex?”

I laugh, because it’s impossible not to. “I don’t have any secrets from you, Echo. You know that.”

He nods. “Well, then, you might as well tell me what E.A.’s up to this time. Before it becomes too big of a deal, and he won’t let me near him in case I manage to change his mind about it. Whatever it is.”

“There are some things I can’t tell you,” I warn him, as I head to the apartment door.

“Disturbing details?” he asks.

I nod, and he stays quiet as I unlock the door.

He lets out a soft groan once we’re standing at the top of the staircase that leads down to the alley behind the office, and the private entrance point, next to the dumpsters.

Echo screws up his nose, instantly offended by the smells out here.

I’ve never had much of a sense of smell, which I can at least be thankful for considering where we live. It sucks when it comes to my Omega, because I can’t tell when he’s perfuming.

At least, not until I’m close enough to taste his slick, then my senses are filled up by his sweetness.

I guess I can’t really complain.

“He’s not using this woman he’s going to hire for bait, is he?” Echo asks as he starts down the stairs.

“That’s exactly what he intends to do,” I grumble, still pissed off about it.

“So, she’s an Omega?” His voice perks up a little.

He’s always been intrigued by the idea of meeting another Omega.

Considering how rare and well protected they are, the only real shot he had was before he met E.A. and I, when he could have enrolled in one of the academies. I’m glad he didn’t. Those places are exploitative. They only exist so rich assholes can cherry pick mates for their kids.

“She’s a Beta,” I tell him, knowing he’ll take that as a disappointment. “It’s not what she is. It’s who she is.”

“I’ve never heard her name before.”

“You wouldn’t have. It was only in the news recently.”

“In the news …” he murmurs. “Does this have something to do with Frank Palmer?”

I stop short of asking him how he knows about Frank Palmer. Everyone knows about the world’s most prolific serial killer. Echo didn’t always avoid the news. It’s something he realized he needed to do after he figured out how badly it was affecting his mental health.

“It does,” I tell him.

“I know he died. The day after it was like Christmas day around the city, remember. It was fucking nuts.”

“Well, he attacked one last person before that happened. Right before.”
